Winter will always put me in a Cadfael mood; this series is just grand for snuggling down in the midst of snowy weather. The televised adaptation of this story is something of a bastardization, but I enjoy both takes rather equally. Religious quandaries, miracles from saints, and a forbidden romance between a novice ill-suited for the cloister and a singer's slavegirl: Peters never disappoints with her layered webs of historical mystery and romance.

3.5 stars, really

This is the kind of series where every book is much the same, so it's hard to say anything either way about it except that I like the series' conceit.

A Good Read, but I think I need a break from Brother Cadfael for a while.

I enjoyed it. Be warned, it has some major spoilers for some previous Cadfael mystery. I'm not sure which, as this is my first Cadfael in decades.
