Now there was a massive hype about this book and plenty of raving reviews. So I had to check it out for myself, luckily I got a copy from the library. It is a huge book at over 400 pages, but I easily devoured over half of it in a day. I was not disappointed.
I hate when people say this but there is a huge, unexpected twist in this story which had me shook and gob smacked. Really. Never in a million years did I see it... It also gave me a fear of elevators aka Lifts in the UK. Eeek. Brilliant. Its gripping. Tense. Edge of your seat reading. You never know what's going to happen next or when. Brilliantly written.
This went straight into my top twenty reads of the year. Highly recommend. A well deserved five stars. A must read from me. Impressed.

Excellent thriller, well written, this would make a good movie to watch. There's a twist at the end I didn't see coming. Lots of gore and deaths in the name of revenge, making a (slightly) potentially sympathetic killer unredeemable!
I liked the description of locations in New York, saw it through the writer's eyes.

New York sees terrible elevator accidents in a frenzied three-day period, do the authorities think it's a home-grown terrorist group called Flyovers (who hate the coastal moneyed-rich) or the work of a crazed madman who seems to be hitting random buildings?? Fast paced action made it an exciting read.

i really enjoyed this book. i think my high rating is partially given my dislike of the last book i read, but this one hit the spot. i’ve been a linwood barklay fan for a while, and i love that you can trust that you will know everything that adds up to the answer when it is revealed, and elevator pitch lives up to that. i feel like i read it in the way envisioned, where i fell for the fakeout and was suitably surprised by the end reveal.

i didn’t love all of the characters, no, but i cared about them, and that’s what counts. the first few barclay books i read were all single person narration, and while i didn’t like the first book i read that deviated from that formula, this was far better. i could have used more of the detectives, who i felt we’re sort of the heart of the story, at least from my perspective - i’m sure the whole family affair was meant to be, but i loved borque and delgado.

I’m not going to lie, I seriously struggled with this book. After reading and loving A Noise Downstairs, I was super excited to sink my teeth into another book by Barclay. Unfortunately, I just couldn’t connect with these characters. The storyline was unique, but a bit all over the place. While I did appreciate the twist at the end, the end of this book just couldn’t soon enough.

It was good! I can't believe I haven't read any of Linwood Barclay's other books - YET!

What can I say about my latest Barclay book? It's a corker of a tale and the pages just almost seemed to be turning themselves. He sets everything up for nicely - there's more than one murder, a cast of great characters and a plausible plot. I really did enjoy this book and felt myself always wanting to read just that one more chapter. I really enjoyed as well how the author had more than one idea running through the book, so when I thought that I'd solved how murders were taking place - it was actually someone else entirely who had been there the whole time, un-noticed by me.
These type of books are just the ones I like to get my teeth into and I was confident this would be a good read. I was not disappointed!

Wow I just finished Elevator Pitch by Linwood Barclay. All I can say is I couldn't put it down. Kept me reading and reading. I just kept me turning and turning the pages. And the surprises at the end blew me away. I'm not great at reviews but if you like a good thriller with shocks and surprises along the way that will keep you turning pages Elevator Pitch is for you. Loved it.

I adore Linwood Barclay. This one wasn’t for me, however. I couldn’t connect with the characters at all, and I struggled getting even half way through the book.

Sadly I wasn't interested in the plot of Elevator Pitch for a good majority of the book. The characters weren't overly investable, the narrative itself not enough of a thriller to capture me completely. I wasn't really interested in anything that was happening until about the last fifth of the book, which is way too slow a burn for me. The premise is cool but I felt it wasn't solid enough to stretch across such a long book, and may have worked better in novella form or at least cleaved to around half the size. This is my first experience with Linwood Barclay and I'm sad that it was a bad one, but as I've heard great things I will endeavour to try more of his works in the future.

I mean wow! What a book! One thing for sure I don’t think I’ve ever gonna go in a lift ever ever ever again!

When I first started listening I had no idea what was going to happen. I didn’t read the blurb, I followed the hype for this book and boy am I glad! What an adventure!!!

From the opening scene, I felt nervous, but I think that’s mainly because of the book title, however, I had every frigging right to be nervous – jeez. I didn’t expect that to come.

But then straight away we are meshed between two detectives trying to solve a murder and a reporter trying to get a scoop. Again, still none the wiser on the journey.

Every chapter, Barclay amped up the intensity. Each time a lift was mentioned, I had to pause and shout at the characters to take the stairs, to run, go home, anything just don’t go in that lift!!!! I did love that Barclay did tease us a lot! One scene when the paramedics needed the lift, and the old lady tried to joyride the lift my heart was in my throat. I couldn’t listen anymore….just in case!!

It is funny how a book can play on your mind so much. I had to get in a lift the other day and for the first time, I was petrified!!

Every description and dialogue was necessary, even if it was a distraction, leading up to the shocking finale. Wow wow wow! That was not a finale I was expecting but it was blinking epic!! Barclay is not afraid to go against the grain here and he proved it because no one is safe.

So many different aspects I want to talk about but I don’t and won’t spoil the enjoyment and surprise for you. I devoured this audiobook as quickly as I could. I was hooked and kept wanting peace just to get back to it. It had everything I wanted in a book.

I had so many emotions with this book and heartbreak was one of them. I didn’t expect to feel that, but I did. My heart broke, my heart raced and my heart thudded with joy when it was over because you know it meant people were safe again!

I enjoyed the narrator, he is up there with my favourites of Dick Hill and Jeff Harding. Although there was a scene with Delgado and Burke and I felt when Delgado was delivering some really important news, Burke just seemed flat and there wasn’t the oomph or shock I was expecting. Apart from that, I would happily listen to Johnathan McClain anytime! An added touch with the audiobook is that you get to listen to a Q and A with Linwood Barclay at the end and that was fascinating.

So yes, go read or listen to it. Just maybe not in a lift…..
