this book is about a 30-year-old child who is looking for a wife who will take the role of a mother and housekeeper so he can enjoy his life in his greenhouse, tormented by his past with his dead brother, abusive father and melancholy dead wife. he is whiny and throws tantrums when something goes slightly different than he thought it would

it gets three stars because i did enjoy quite a few moments, like Eloise bonding with the twins, or all the Bridgertons making appearances throughout the story, but i would have wished a different love story–or just a different progression of this one, even, for her

Well, this was something…

To be honest, the ending chapter felt like it was never going to end. It was annoyingly boring, and I feel like it didn’t add anything to the plot. It’s just there, to reach the word count goal.

Also, chapter fifteen almost ruined the book for me. We had finally made Phillip kind of likable, and Julia Quinn pulls up that situation —which, by the way, didn’t get ANY resolution whatsoever, or if it got one, it was terribly done.

I enjoyed the book until
the got married
. After that, it got progressively worse and boring.

After reading the four Bridgerton books prior to this one, I can say I was really disappointed with this one. The first thing I can point out is how short the book is and that the story felt very rushed with little time given to have the two characters actually get to know each other.
We barely get to see any of these twos letters even though we learn they have been corresponding for a whole year.
And the parts that were meant to showcase their growing connection seem so detached. The book follows the same "You are compromised, we mush preserve your reputation so you have to marry" which is getting annoying at this point. And there is always that reoccurring theme of a disagreement between the two leads followed by some sexual activity which does not sit well with me. These books are getting really repetitive which I cannot say is a bad thing as most romance novels are in fact the same, I just wish there were more of some things and less of others.

With everything bad out of the way, time to get to the things I liked, Oliver and Amanda were such refreshing characters who warmed my heart and the second epilogue was good too.

This is, so far, my least favorite Bridgerton book out of the series and it is largely Phillip Crane's fault. This book does have great moments with the cast of characters we've grown to love, its got a lot of heart, good humor, and a surprising amount of intensity. But I found Phillip insufferable. He is rather misogynistic but it is slightly disgused under his trauma. Trauma, however, is not an excuse to be hurtful and dismissive toward your wife and children. He comes across as a total jack ass at several moments. The cliche excuse of "oh men and women come from two different worlds so i cant be expected to understand my wife and her womanly feelings" is used far too much with his character. We dont get nearly enought time with him toward the end for proper character development to outweigh the BS he does for most of the novel. Hes also lowkey emotionally abusive and has borderline consent issues. To give the book some props, it has one of the most complex and emotionally gripping plots out of the first 5 books in the series. Its dealing with death, generational trauma, and depression is actually rather intense for this type of book/this series. It makes the book feel much more developed and fleshed out. I likely would have gone with a full 4-4.5 stars if Phillip wasnt such a jerk.

At first, I thought the book was a little slow at the start of it. But as I read through it, I thought it was better halfway through and to the ending. There definitely were some parts that made me laugh a little bit. I enjoyed it. Now onto the next book..
