I love Morganville. I’m not sure how else to say this, other than tell you that I love this series. It is probably (or, most definitely,) one of my favorite series. I started this series when only a handful of the books were out, I think, and read the new ones almost immediately after I get them. Sometimes a series will get tiring after so many books, but this one just gets better and makes me love it even more after each one. This one included.
Black Dawn was the continuation of the draugs, with, um, that thing with Amelie, and then something bad happened with Shane, which gave me a very cute moment between him and Claire, and some tense stuff happened between Eve and Michael, and there were a lot of point-of-view changes, and then it ended with something that I’m unsure of between Amelie and the Draug and Oliver, and I want the next one.
Sorry, I’m trying to keep it vague and spoiler-free, since I know that a lot of people haven’t read this far into, or any of, this series. (Which, what is wrong with you? Go read them now!)
I love Shane and Claire. Clair is amazing, and totally badass, and even more so in this book. One scene in particular with Oliver, and then a bit later with Myrnin, was very awesome and badass. And I always love the scenes between Claire and Shane, they always make me smile and fangirl all over the place. Also, I found that I didn’t care as much about the chapter in other peoples’ point-of-view. Not that I would skip them, or anything, just that I didn’t enjoy them as much. Not Shane’s, though; I kind of did enjoy those. The others’ were interesting, I liked being in their head and seeing what they were seeing; I just personally enjoy Claire and Shane more.
I don’t think I liked what happened with Amelie at the end. I was prepared for the opposite, and while I see the merits to it, it just doesn’t seem right. Maybe that everything shouldn’t have worked out so well, I guess. I’m curious about what will happen in the next one, between Amelie and Oliver, and how Clare and Shane and them are, ah, kind of neutral now. I’m really curious, actually, what will happen next.
I’m super excited for the next one, want it now, and don’t want to wait. But I’m glad that I don’t have to wait a whole year, like with most other books.
(Sidenote: In this book, it’s mentioned that Eve is the big sister to Jason. What? I never really thought about it, but I guess figured that she was the youngest, and totally skipped the whole part when it was first mentioned. Her being older makes sense, what with leaving him behind and how he turned out, but I was really surprised.)
(Oh, also, I remember Caine mentioning that she’s working on another YA book. Romeo and Juliet type of thing? Doesn’t sound as appealing as I would hope, but I’m still excited to read it, whenever it comes out.)(It’s kind of amazing how many books she works on and releases around the same time.)

Michael, Eve, Claire and Shane have joined some surviving residents and vampires at Amelie's residence in Founder's Square while others hide in their homes to escape the draug. With Amelie seriously ill, a mission to find Theo in town is top of the list, as is turning several houses around town into weapons stores in case they have to fight on the move. Everyone must work together to defeat their common enemy but can they overcome the divisions between themselves?

Eve is realising the danger of being involved with a vampire and is flinching every time Michael comes near her. Michael is guilt ridden over what he did to her but is it going to be too late for them to repair their relationship? Eve is also furious to learn that Naomi is biting Jason and that he wants to be a vampire, so she cuts a deal with the vampire to provide her with information, wondering if she just made a deal with the devil. Naomi is determined to rule instead of Oliver when Amelie dies and needs to know why Magnus wants Claire.

Myrnin has been spending every moment in his new lab, trying to find something that will destroy the draug but without success. Instead, he thinks that disabling the water treatment plant will stop the draug using the sewers to move around, buying them some time. But who is going to join him on the mad trip to the plant, and who will get out alive? A rescue mission is planned to rescue their fallen colleague and they are shocked when Monica insists on joining Richard and Hannah in helping them, feeling that she needs to make up for something in her past.

Shane comes up with an idea on how they might be able to defeat the draug which means another dangerous mission in town. Claire is very worried about his health, especially his current mental condition as he struggles to seperate reality from dreams. The anti vampire resistance are about to make themselves known to the draug and Morganville is about to lose one of it's resistance members to the enemy...

There is plenty of action in this book as they try to battle the draug and save their town. I liked the two raids on the water treatment plant and the one on the maintenance shed. I liked that it was Shane who came up with the idea that just might save the town. I could also hit Eve for her stupidity over the Jason plot and hit Claire for blaming Myrnin for everything that goes wrong. Give a vampire a break, y'know??!!

3.5 stars is more accurate for this book.

I started this series back when I was still in secondary school. The Morganville Vampires is very, very long series so it has taken forever to get here. I started Black Dawn immediately after Last Breath back in 2017 but I was pretty bored, so I DNF'd after about 100 pages. It has been hunting from my bookshelves since but I finally finished it.

I didn't like Myrnin's behavior in this book. I usually love his crazy self but his choices made me want to scream at him. I was so happy he was wearing his vampire bunny slippers, though in that one scene. Can I order those somewhere? I don't even wear slippers but I want them.

I still find Shane and Claire's relationship sweet, after all these years. I love that Shane could anchor and made her feel less out of control by only holding her hand. I like how they are the same. Shane still wonders how smart, pretty girl like Claire wants him and she knew that Shane could do better than her.

I can't say the same about Michael and Eve. I like those two as characters but I never really got their relationship. I guess it just doesn't make sense to me why people are so surprised when their vampire boyfriend suddenly gets a little too carried away when you give them your blood. It's like just because they act like human, you forget what they really are. I didn't like how Eve thought even for a second of leaving him but then epilogue was what it was. It might've been different if we actually got a POV about what made her change her mind.
