DNF. I'm giving up on this one. I like the premise of this book, and I'm not especially bothered by the fact that it's a bit unoriginal in its plot. What I can't get over, however, is how incredibly dull the characters are. In particular, the female CDC research scientist is so devoid of personality that I found her sections completely boring.

[Tiny spoiler ahead]

And I'm sorryyyy, but even I know that you can't just stroll off a black hawk covered in contaminated blood and Ebola goo. Why do we need to endure complaints from every character (including the CDC scientist!) about what seems to be a perfectly reasonable decontamination procedure?

That's the only scene I'm going to mention, but trust me when I say that I found myself questioning just how "elite" this Delta Force Team really is more than once.

There are better post apocalyptic fiction books/series out there. I do not plan on continuing with this one. The Arisen series is a good one.

This guy really, really likes the word “slurp.” Besides “a” “and” and “the” it must be the most-used word in this book (and according to my husband in the whole series).

Just too violent for me to enjoy. Reads like weird violence porn.

Eh. Not terrible, but the characters were pretty one dimensional, some of the dialogue was terrible, and there just wasn't much interesting to set this apart from every other zombie book.

'Vietnam was just a place for marines to go and die.'

Master Sergeant Beckham and his men are charged with recovering a virus sample of an Ebola variant that turns the infected into violent killers. I got around to this after stumbling on its prequel, ‘Extinction Red Line’, some time back and loving it. This one is just solid gory action and nothing but solid gory action. It is nowhere near as well constructed or entertaining as the prequel, and I became bored quite soon into it. Nothing new here for me, but others seemed to have liked it.

This was a fun sci-fi horror shoot 'em up. You're not going to find any amazing dialogue or plot but what is here is a great distraction.

I really enjoyed the author's take on the infected, and do appreciate his attention to detail in terms of firearms. The back and forth between the action and the science aspect was good pacing as well.

Better than Orbs, but still not on the Hell Divers level. The writing needs work as far as character depth, but the story line is great. I really like that this author has such a range of stories.

Is there a possible romance brewing between Kate & Beckham? (I hope so!) There is good science behind the infected, but I wouldn't consider this a true zombie story. The military aspect seems almost forced, but not exactly realistic (based solely on other military fiction I've read). The author makes a point to let us know that the infected still have some sot of humanity left deep inside (a "hint") which makes them less mindless or monstrous at times, although it is unclear if this is really the case or if it is wishful thinking on the protagonist's part.

Gibson's character is the epitome of "the road to hell is paved with good intentions." Overall good story.
