“Because,' she said, 'when you're scared but you still do it anyway, that's brave.” - Neil Gaiman, Coraline
Coraline Jones moves into a new home with her work-overloaded parents, seeing as there are no children in the building Coraline decides to explore her new home. What she doesn't expect is to find a locked door that when opened leads to a parallel of her home exactly as it is...only it's different. At first, things are amazing - the food is better, the toys are better, everything just seems magical. Coraline has another mother and father who are urging her to stay so she can always be their little girl. Oh, and did I mention? They have buttons for eyes.
Other children are trapped in this world forever, and Coraline is their only hope. She must outwit the other mother at her own twisted games to free the lost souls and even her parents. Coraline acquires help from a mysterious black cat that can travel between both worlds with her - only on the other side, it can talk.
The writing style is so creepy, I'm not one who gets scared easily but even this one was giving me the creeps. I listened to this on audio and it was narrated by Neil Gaiman himself and it truly was amazing. I felt like I was alongside Coraline in her journey, although it might be a little scary for children, the story of Coraline shows immense bravery and makes me want to be a braver person!
