I knew I wouldn’t like it but everyone else was hyping it up so I cave in and read it and I DIDNT LIKE IT! It bored me to death I was almost put to sleep by it. I should always trust my gut! Lesson learned. I’m not rating this because it wouldn’t be fair to pick books I don’t usually go for AND rate them a star or two.

Beth, Jasper, Arthur, Charlotte and Bev – such great chargers! There were a lot of characters to love but just as many to hate.
All these people content in their little acts of harsh cruelty, secure in being better than others for their fake virtue.
Elizabeth Baine was one of them that I hated instantly the way you hate a cockroach. I hate it when Beth even spoke to her because you can't give a monster an inch, ever. And at 70% I wanted to watch her, her employer, and associates burn. The second we met Don Gravely, was hoping he would choke and that was before he opened his mouth. Visceral hate because we all have been around people like this – who would stand by and watch a person bleed out at their feet without calling an ambulance if it made them one dime.

3.5, написано ДУЖЕ красиво, але головна героїня часто дратувала, в другій половині історії стало якось нудно, ну і фінал непоганий, але я очікувала більшого

i’m a bit sad rating this 3.5 stars. i really enjoyed the writing style and premise of the book. the alternating povs from opal to arthur were done super well and made the reading experience more engaging. the romance build-up was very nice, and i love how that ultimately played out. i was pretty into the story for most of the book and loved the idea of a house calling to people. however, i was disappointed by the “reveal” eleanor being in underland and cursing people for centuries i was hoping for something grander maybe? it was cool to see what the real starling house story was but the end was just talking essentially. i was expecting more action or a mysterious reveal about a mysterious house but alas. i think this had good themes and overall message but i was just a bit letdown by the end. my first alix e harrow book though, so i will be checking out her other work!
