Creepy books are not my thing. And this one seemed like a long story. But when I think of everything it covered, I don't blame it at all. Set during the London blitz with children shipped to Scotland for safety, they find themselves under evil magic they do not understand, with logical Kat unwilling to face the truth. This one reminds me of The Night Gardener crossed with Splendors and Glooms.

What a great story! Creepy, haunting, the perfect novel for young readers looking for a ghost story. There were times reading this book that I kept thinking of Guillermo del Toro and his clever ghost stories. I could see an adaptation of this directed by this amazing director.

Think Narnia + Harry Potter. An exciting read with strong heroine. Might be too frightening for sensitive or young middle grade readers.

Janet Fox clearly put a lot of thought into this one. The pieces of the mystery fit together snugly and will keep most kids (and adults!) guessing. I will say that I got a bit bored with the reveal but others may not. It was really the eeriness of the story that captured me. I love a good spook and with a sketchy castle, dreary Scottish weather, a group of ever-present rooks, wandering ghostly children, and a soul-hungry headmistress, this did not disappoint.

Student Reviews:
*I definitely enjoyed reading The Charmed Children of Rookskill Castle. It was a suspenseful and creepy novel that takes you back to the 1940s during WWII. You follow Kat and her siblings and friends on journey during their strange stay at Rookskill Castle Children's Academy. Lady Eleanor is up to no good, trying to charm all the children in the castle so she can gain power and life. My favorite character was Robbie, a very determined and courageous boy who is Kat's younger brother. I loved the cover, it only added to the creepy feel of the book. With all the rooks and the dark sky, very nice. I think the author chose the title because the children that attend the school get charmed by the Lady. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read a spine-chilling novel. –Amanda C., 7th grade 16-17

*You would like The Charmed Children of Rookskill Castle if you like creepy, kinda scary, suspenseful books. The books about kids going to a school that's a castle, and they find the Lady Elenor suspicious and they try to find out what's going on in Rookskill castle. –Sevian M., 7th grade 16-17

*The Charmed Children of Rookskill Castle is a great book for readers who want a good mystery. Told in third person with flashbacks to the past, Janet Fox brings you alongside Kat to find out the secret of the castle and the creepy Lady Eleanor. –Kiersten R., 7th grade 16-17

This was a lovely creepy tale to read the weekend before Halloween. A good recommendation for kids who love the sort of book that is just scary enough without being true horror.

Spooky... not one of those books I should read at night if I want to fall asleep without jumping at small noises! I really enjoyed it though... the atmosphere was creepy without being dark, I liked the characters, and the WWII setting was brilliant as was the use of the chatelaine, something I'd never heard of.
It could have benefited from being slightly shorter, I think. 50 fewer pages would have kept the suspense strong. And the end was a little anticlimactic... they defeat the magical problem but then have to deal with a more mundane one that just doesn't feel as dangerous. So I would reorganize and trim a little if it were MY book, but this one was still fun. Would recommend for mature tweens or teens... it's pretty spooky for kids.
