I have had this book sitting on my bookshelf for some time and I am wishing now I had read it sooner. I was attracted to the cover and after reading the synopsis I was intrigued by the family history aspect.
I found myself absorbed with Lucy’s story. The story is narrated in the first person making it easy to identify with her. The setting for the story is near water and nature which is very much brought to life by the descriptive writing. However, it is a slow build story which I found difficult at times but I stayed with it and I am glad I did.

I'm between a 3 and a 4 star rating but I'm rounding up since I'm in a generous mood and I think I would have liked it more if I wasn't reading at last week.
This would have been a great novella if the author had focused on the characters in the letters. Instead it is about 150 pages too long and focuses on a self-absorbed wanderlust.

Hmmm. I have mixed feelings about this book. Focused on a 29yr old American woman who returns home after years of living in asia. Back home on the Lake of Dreams she is haunted by stories of a mysterious great aunt who was shunned by the family. The lead deals with her own angst over her fathers death and the tale of what happened to her aunt. I found the voice to be somewhat slow and plodding. At times she also just felt like a narcissistic whiner and yet I still read it. Hmmmm.
There's a lot going on with this book: family dynamics, romantic turmoil, historical mystery, town politics, and more, so I can understand why some reviewers thought it was a bit all over the place. Despite that, and while I agree that there were some aspects of the book I found unnecessary, overall, it kept me entertained, especially the story of Rose.
When Lucy Jarrett goes home to Lake of Dreams after her mother has an accident, she finds herself caught up in family drama- including long buried family secrets. Slow moving and pretty dull.
A beautifully written book. Kim Edwards is an amazing story-teller. I particularly am impressed by how much historically accurate information she was able to weave into the story without coming off as overly textbook-ish.

My rating - Three Stars.
I liked this book but I didn't love it and I found it bit boring. Both the atmosphere and the writing was okay. The paced of plot was bit slow and I would have this book to be shorter. the cover of book was fine. The characters was okay but they needed be flash out bit more.
