liked the tone and subject matter, and even Luthi’s prose, but the plot was slow and I didn't connect well to the characters. I kept asking myself why is this happening? And why don't I care? Just kept wishing he'd get on to the next bit and continuing to be disappointed in the story.

This book was gripping from start to finish. Pilgrim is a theological horror novel. If you like crusade history and ancient horrors, you will fall deeply into this story. My misgiving with the horror in this book is all the body horror. Really not my cup of tea, though it worked great in the story and was extremely effective . This is an incredibly dark story, though there are moments of humor to take the edge off, there is still an edge, and it cuts deep. I don't know if I would have finished it if it weren't so well written, it's quite a slog.
