When I first started writing poetry, back in my age-of-16 angst, I saw this book advertised and, after being a relative fan of her music, asked my parents to pretty please buy it for Christmas. I like this book - its not groundbreaking but its timidly real. Its naive enough to ponder on and, at the time, I liked it so much that I can see remnants of trying to steal her style in my own early writings. Its easy to read, it covers all the usual love, loneliness and sexual blossoming, and I think everyone would find at least ONE thing to appreciate or relate to.

The poetry BIBLE! For me anyway. This is one of my all-time absolute favorite books. It might even be No. 1. Jewel is my lyrical and musical hero.

There was a sadness to some of the poems in this collection. A few seemed rather flippant and whimsical, and a few grabbed me with their imagery.

These poems are the free form style that is not as hard to grasp as other types of poetry. This poem type worked well with some of the poems that Jewel has written, and made me want to skim over other poems in the book.

I've been a fan of Jewel as a songwriter for years. I very much enjoyed this look into her poetry. It is not as polished as her songs. Some of the poems seemed child-ish (and may have been written at a much younger time in her life). The book was a mixture of fantastic poems and eh poems.

I was very interested in the paintings included in the book. However, I think that they suffered fro being black and white reproductions. Even though they were all of falling water, it was hard to tell what they were in black and white.

With the recent release of Jewel's Lullaby album, I do hope she is able to share more of her poetry with the world. I would love to see how it has progressed over the years since this first volume was published.

Oh the Nostalgia!!! I first owned and loved this book when I still thought the word nipple was a bad word and had no clue what half of these poems were actually about (sex baby!!) lol I vividly remember reading a few from this collection and of the whole collection my favorites then, are still my favorites now, and they are the strongest of this entire collection. 3/5 from me. It was nice to hear the author orate her own poems. And it is a quick listen.

I picked this book up because of the beautiful and meaningful title, A Night Without Armor. How telling. But as I began to read each and every page filled with the chorus of a life, I realized that it was so much more than a book of poems, but more a memoir of a woman's life written in poem form. This compilation is fantastic.

Here is my favorite poem of all the ones in the book, so spoiler alert, or simply a sampling from a grouping of poems that I recommend any writer or poet to read.

"So Just Kiss Me and let my hair
messy itself in your fingers

tell me nothing need to be done -
no clocks need winding

There is no bell without a voice
needing to borrow my own

instead, let me steady myself
in the arms

of a man who won't ask me to be
what he needs, but lets me exist

as I am

a blonde flame
a hurricane

wrapped up
in a tiny body

that will come to his arms
like the safest harbor

for mending

I think that's enough said!
