It's understood that Richard Laymon was masturbating while "writing" this right?

Like that's pretty clear isn't it?

It isn't that this is a nearly 300-page rape fantasy. It's that it's a badly written 300-page rape fantasy.

Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

This book felt like a cross between The hills have eyes and Outlast - an excellent combo.

This book was gory and inappropriate but I found myself really enjoying it. I only wish it was longer and that maybe some things were done a bit differently. I loved how some characters you expected to be bad weren't and some you expected to be good weren't. I'm torn between loving the fast pace because I was sucked in right away, and wishing the pace was a bit slower to build more suspense and to care more about the characters.

Some things felt pretty unebelievable.
I have a hard time believing the family of cannibals can live in the woods and eat sacrifices without anyone finding out or calling in the military. I felt like it needed more of a supernatural element for me to buy that premise. I know the big daddy cannibal was more supernatural but it wasn't quite enough. I also have a hard time believing anyone would have any sexual feelings when they're hungry, dehydrated, dirty, and in a serious survival situation. There's no way.

While the story and character development felt rushed, I felt the writing was good enough for me to enjoy the ride.

This book is excessively horny. The kind of book where you have to know what everyone's breasts are doing in every chapter, lest you forget that breasts exist. However, I knew that going in and was curious to try a Laymon book anyway. And I did read this in one sitting. It was very fast paced and entertaining. The over the top horniness made it impossible to take seriously, which was kind of a shame because the horror bits were pretty good. But think of it as a gory, cheesy 80s horror movie in book form, and it's not a bad time. I'd probably try Laymon again when I'm in that paperback from hell kinda mood.

Not rated. This experience defies earth numbers 😂

A fast, fun, intense book. The books starts crazy and only gets more insane. What I really liked about this book is that it never felt like it took itself too seriously, it was sort of like The Island in that regard, the stakes are high and there is a huge body count, and some very disturbing imagery. But much like The Island it felt like a book that was just meant to be a guilty pleasure.

One place where the book kind of suffered a little for me personally is that I just kept comparing it to Jack Ketchum's Off Season which is a better book. I guess if you read one book about cannibalistic hillbillies then you feel like you've read them all.
