Loved the show and absolutely love the first book in the series.
There is mystery and a lot of humor.
Highly recommend.

Set in Wyoming, it has a mix of Western and Native American characters. A good mystery, which makes me want to read more, but more so makes me want to go back and read more [a:Tony Hillerman|26917|Tony Hillerman|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1281729229p2/26917.jpg].
I chose to read this book because I had finally finished the Longmire TV series, and I must say that I’m quite content with the decision. This mystery-thriller is set against the backdrop of a tempestuous Wyoming landscape, and the characters in both versions are rugged yet colorful.
This first novel centers on the deaths of and threats against four white teenage boys who were convicted of the rape of a Cheyenne girl. Walt Longmire, sheriff of Absaroka County and somewhat recent widower, attempts to solve these current crimes while also trying to rebuild his own ramshackle life. Of course, Henry Standing Bear is the best character in both forms of the series, but the novelized version is much more of a cheeky Casanova than how Lou Diamond Phillips played him. Overall, the story was fascinating and the writing quality notable.

A fan of the TV show (no one was more surprised than me), I'm now a fan of the novel. This version of Walt is bit more complicated and more of an everyman. It's first person, so you come to know him better and more quickly. Vic (and Lucian) as written really couldn't be done on TV, so they don't seem like variations, but rather unique characters. Henry Standing Bear does, however, sound like Lou Diamond Phillips in my head.
Audio book. Not a character and story that interests me. Quit after a couple days.

This might appeal to Wyomingites. But for me, a lot of the writing was enigmatic. For example, I had to read the passage that follows several times before I realized what they were talking about.
I had to calm down and bring it all together in a fluid motion; that's when it occurred to me to breathe. I filled my chest cavity and felt the burn of flooding oxygen as I flipped up the Vernier sight.
"Six seventy-five..."
"Seven hundred if it's an inch."
"Damn it." I readjusted as quickly as I could.
And then there were gems like this:
The clouds were dappled like the hindquarters of an Appaloosa colt, and the beauty kicked just as hard.
I fear I am just not Wyoming enough for this.
