~~Actual Rating: 3.5~~

I started listening to The Cold Dish after watching the first season of Longmire on Netflix. I absolutely loved the show (even though I haven't finished watching all four seasons). The show does a wonderful job of maintaining the tongue and cheek tone of the novel.

The Cold Dish is the first in the Walt Longmire series and focuses on the murders of teenagers that participated in the rape of Melissa Littlebird, a girl from the nearby Cheyenne reservation suffering from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The teenagers escaped judicial punishment and three years later, someone is taking revenge.

As I said earlier, the novel is very tongue and cheek, and I felt that the narrator of the book for Audible was perfectly chosen because it was a very dry sense of humor and he conveyed that perfectly. It's incredibly well-written, although I must admit I wasn't a huge fan of the tangents and flashbacks that were sprinkled liberally through the novel. I felt that they were a little too out of the blue, but that could be blamed on the fact that I was listening to it in the car. The Cold Dish was a little slow for my liking when it comes to novels in the mystery genre, but it totally kept me guessing all the way up until the end.

Craig Johnson did a masterful job of including the Native American beliefs and traditions, and I felt that the tension between the Cheyenne and the white man was really perfectly captured.

I will definitely continue the series, and would recommend to any fan of mystery and western novels

I really enjoyed the richness of this book. Clever plotting. Excellent descriptions without getting boring. A tough guy, who is a bit dim, but the writing is intelligent. Pay close attention and follow along, because there are some jumps but not impossible to get (unless you are sleepy).

Walt Longmire is a sheriff in Wyoming, near Little Big Horn. Nothing much happens in this small town, until a body is founded surrounded by sheep, the body of a man that had been accused of rape. Now Walt is facing one of the biggest challenges of his tenure as sheriff, because almost anyone in the town has a motive to kill the deceased.

I loved this book, it was fast-paced and wonderfully written.

Some profanity, but not over the top.
adventurous funny slow-paced

I've been meaning to get to the Longmire series for a long time. I finally got the audio book of The Cold Dish and I'm glad I did. Walt Longmire is the Sheriff of Absoroka County Wyoming. Cody Pritchard end up dead after being convicted of rape and given a suspended sentence. Cody had three accomplices in the rape, who were are given suspended sentences. Walt wonders if this is revenge, or something else.

As the investigation moves forward, we are introduced to a panoply of supporting characters. There is Harry Standing Bear, Walt's long-time friend; Vic, Walt's deputy and sassy heir-apparent; and Lucien Connolly, Walt's mentor. The characters are well-written and I found all of them fascinating.

Craig Johnson does a really good job of describing the town, its inhabitants, and its surroundings. The audio book was so well narrated, I will always hear that voice as I read more books in the series. George Guidall has the perfect voice for Longmire. I loved listening to him talk about the cold and the snow, the small-town people and their quirky personalities, and Walt's thoughts about all of it.

This was a good mystery and solid story telling. I will definitely be revisiting Walt and his cast of supporting characters in the future.

Perhaps this story found me at the wrong point in my life. It was difficult for me to really connect to the characters, even Sherriff Longmire as he investigated the death of a local boy. So many other readers have really enjoyed this series that I think I'll pick this one back up another day. Perhaps trekking through the snow and the mystery of a possible revenge killing will grab me differently in the future.

3.5 ⭐️ I feel like reading this gave me a greater appreciation for the show. They really did cast well and for the most part I feel like all the characters felt true to this book as far as personalities go. I’m still not a huge fan of the relationship that develops between two characters whom I won’t mention. But this book makes it a lot more obvious that it was going to happen than the initial show did so…

“It just seemed to be gratuitously ignorant for any man to think that he could think like a fish.”

I love Walt Longmire and the rest of the cast of earthy and genuine characters in this book. As flawed as Walt is, he has a big heart and an even bigger brain. The rough and rugged atmosphere is enveloping and the story keeps readers in suspense. The TV show has nothing on this book.
