Being introduced to Longmire from the TV show. I found the first novel to be similar to what I expected. I had hoped for a little more investigation or procedural police.
I think I would have liked this book better had I been more "outdoorsy" - but alas, I am not. I loved the main character, Walt Longmire, and his friend Henry Standing Bear was a gloriously fully-realized person on the page. However, so much of it took place in the wilds of Wyoming, and I couldn't really follow what was happening in the last shootout - the specifics of the guns and bullets and terrain and things of that nature probably went over my head. :)
Well written, with solid characterizations with detailed, lingering descriptions of the scenery. The author's love of Western scenery really shines through in the prose. I share his appreciation, but much prefer to look at the scenery than words on a page describing it. In short, I think that written Western crime drama is not my thing. I am interested in checking out the TV show though.

I have mixed feelings about this book. Like many other reviews, I saw the TV show long before picking up the book. To be honest, I think this is definitely one of those times the TV adapters got it right in the sense that they told a better story and gave us better characters. Walt Longmire of the books isn't a particularly good sheriff, and I don't think he's even a particularly good person. His character arc also feels... non-existent. He seems to wind up right back where he started... attempting to drink himself to death, this time with a dog.

Having seen some of the tv show is messing with my enjoyment here. But under struggling with the differences, there is a good story here.
