My brother turned me onto the television series "Longmire," and I burned through the first season in a Netflix binge over Labor Day weekend. The setting and the characters were interesting enough to make me want to grab the the first book in the series. The fact that the author is transplanted from Huntington, WV to Wyoming also caught my fancy.
Johnson does some interesting things with narrative structure. While the story is told from Sheriff Walt Longmire's perspective, there are something akin to flashbacks that were an interesting way to relay a pivotal story from the recent past. There's also a reverence for Native American culture, especially Cheyenne medicine. At one point, Longmire isn't sure if he's hallucinating or if a tribe of dead spirit warriors are singing him to safety in a blizzard. Neither Longmire nor the reader ever gets an answer.
I didn't see the end coming, and I always like that. Perhaps I was thinking too much of the television show, but the Big Bad for this first book came out of the blue. Johnson is talented enough that I'll keep digging through the series.
On a side note, I sure do hope Ben Rehder starts writing again.

I listened to the audiobook. It was great. The reader really made the characters come to life. The book was better than the TV series which we loved.
This, as you can see from my shelves, is one of my favorite books of all time.
Walt Longmire is a sheriff for the county of Absaroka, Wyoming. He has been called to investigate the murder of someone who has appeared to have been "sniped" by a high caliber rifle.
That's the investigation of the book, and while it may seem elementary, it is much more than meets the eye. Mr. Johnson has created both a cast of characters and a world that is incredibly enjoyable to read. A book that is an incredible read with a case that will shock you when you arrive at the books end.
The writing style here is also one of my favorite things, it has such a casual style that it immerses you and makes you feel as though you are in the county itself, below those eloquently described mountains. Good crime and noir, in my opinion, needs to have a strong central character and needs to read as if every sentence is a book in itself. Mr. Johnson's novel has both, and a strong case to boot. If you like crime novels, look no further than the cold dish.

Well...shit.
Did not expect that ending.
This book is fairly different than the show. While a lot of the characters are still there, they are not always the same. Well..... except for Vic's personality. And Henry is spot on.
This story was very different than the corresponding episode of the show so honestly if you're worried about spoiling anything for yourself, my guess is that's not going to be a problem. Then again, this is only the first book so maybe that'll change.
I actually really liked Walt. He's a little bit more sarcastic and funny in the book than the show. I've seen the complaints about swearing on here. *shrugs* I've got no fucking problem with cussin'.
Anyhoo, I really enjoyed this and will definitely seek out more of this series when I allow myself to get more books.....which will probably be sooner than originally anticipated.

meh. Not really my genre, I guess. I can recognize that it's well-written, but I don't intend to read any more.
Spectacular read. I'm a Longmire fan from the TV show, and this was an extremely pleasant surprise (even though I don't know why I would be surprised). I'm looking forward to working my way through the rest of the Longmire books, to delve deeper in this world.
Can't say I loved the ending, but I thoroughly enjoyed this cast of characters, especially Walt Longmire. His witty banter and intellectual discourse kills me. I've already picked up the next two books in the series.
When it comes to audio books in particular, sometimes I get into genre ruts and need something to clear the palette. This book was a good palette cleanser. I usually don't read murder mysteries but this one came recommended.
The story started off slow and I was definitely considering returning it. I'm glad I didn't though. A few chapters in though, it finally picked up and started getting interesting. The author did a very good job of not doing the ending until the end.
If you too are looking for a palette cleanser, I'd definitely recommend. I'll be adding this series to my cleanser list

I love a good mystery novel. I, as well as most avid readers, can say that it’s hard to find a good mystery novel. I mean they can’t all be Murder on the Orient Express. So when I picked up this book, somewhat sheepishly as I’d already watched the Longmire series, I was expecting to find another whodunit that held my attention for a while before I figured it out and finished the book disappointed in the lack of originality. Well SPOILER ALERT FOLKS this book was phenomenal. I couldn’t put it down. The characters were both familiar and yet intriguingly different from the show. The story twisted around in ways I wasn’t expecting and the ending, people listen, I didn’t see it coming. I can’t remember the last time I was this shocked by the final reveal. I’ve read all of the Longmire books now that I’m getting around to writing this review and this one is by far the best.
