The best slow burn book I have read!!

OMG!!! I did not expect this book to captivate me as much as it did. The "Brentwood Baseball / Towel Brigade" series has had its ups and downs for me but these last two books (this one and The Strike Out) have been AMAZING and have made me super glad I've kept reading every book. The sexual chemistry between Walker and Kate is OFF THE CHARTS but because of their jobs, they can't act on it... and so enters what felt like the longest and BEST slow burn between a couple EVER!!! This book is worth every second (or five seconds... if you've read the book, you know!) and I highly recommend it!! FABULOUS!!

Buckle up y’all because I hated this and you need to suffer with me

Oh man… I actively hated this book while reading it. And usually even if I find faults in the Brentwood Boys series (like the time jump in The Locker Room that provided no post-time jump time for the characters to once again get to know each other, or the fact that I just didn’t care for Jason as a character in The Lineup), I can count on the books to be funny and full of chemistry. But this one was just… not.

Walker was such a compelling character when he cameo’d in The Lineup, working with Jason’s charity. Even in See Me After Class when he went on a date with the heroine, I was stoked for his book. But apparently him in too high of doses = a total buzzkill. Because he IS an asshole. I don’t care if he donates money in his free time or volunteers without telling people, if you act the way he acts to people in general… to the public, to your teammates, you’re an asshole.

I think the most heartbreaking part of this book for me was when he was supposed to do a meet and greet with an injured army veteran who lost his legs. Walker blows up at a guy on his team he doesn’t like, and inadvertently insults the veteran, Lieutenant Gordan, by saying he’s only there because it’s mandatory. That’s fucking CRUEL. I don’t care if that’s not what he intended, or if he really did care for the veteran, it was horrible. And he asked for the guy’s contact info to apologize… but never did it on page. I just went back and double checked, did a full search for “Gordan” and he’s never mentioned again. WHY!??!? WHY would you do that to me?! Now all I can think about is this poor fictional man who was insulted by a character who isn’t real!

Neither character was great, memorable, or relatable. Kate was described as hot and a competent worker - that’s it. Their chemistry was zilch. I don’t understand how or why they fell for each other. Was it all physical? Because I’ve never been so attracted to someone I can’t function and do my job properly. It just felt so stilted and awkward to me. Their first dinner together the POV changes like 6 times over multiple chapters and I just kept scrolling like, “how long is this dinner going to go on?? This is so awkward!”

Basically, I don’t understand how they fell in love with each other. I don’t understand how they fell in *LIKE* with each other.

And I thought the friendship with Kate/Dan was weird, until… you know.
SpoilerThe “big reveal” that Dan actually = Penn, it’s just a nickname from college. Did I gasp? Yes. But then did I get pissed at Kate, just like Walker did? Hell yeah. She knew Walker’s history with Penn and never said anything, even after he tore his heart open to tell her about Dawn? That’s a shit move. And the excuse that “she didn’t want to lose her job or for people to know he pulled strings for her” is BS because she could literally lose her job for BEING with Walker so she has to trust him at least a little.

The whole plot with Dawn felt… flat. Walker talked a lot about how much he loved her and couldn’t leave Chicago, but he never went to see her grave. The twist with Penn just felt weird and like, too little too late. Like trying to push a super emotional subplot but we don’t know enough to be invested.

Walker! I think this was one of my favorite books out of The Towel Brigade series! Walker was the perfect grumpy tortured man with the most ooey gooey center and I was HERE FOR IT!
Kate was strong and confident and didn’t take anyones shit especially Walkers!
But man that PINNING!!!!! I was fucking swoony so hard in this book! The touches! And that fucking dining room table snack session!

Walker, oh Walker, you came so close to replacing Maddox as my favorite baseball player in Meghan Quinn's series. Like seriously, so close.

Walker is a grump. He's quick to get agitated and quick to get angry. But beneath all of that, he's sweet. He's not afraid to say what he's thinking, or what he's feeling, and I love that about his character. He deals with his love for baseball on this book, and weather it's something he still loves or has grown to hate.

That's where Kate comes in. She's sent to help clean up his grumpy attitude and make the fans love him. At first, she didn't care for him at all, but the more she got to know him and spend time with him, the more she began to care. Their relationship had it's problems and things holding it back, but Walker never once held back his feelings for Kate. Even if they were "wrong," he never held back. This made him lovable to me. "I know, deep in my bones, that she’s the girl I’m meant to be with."

I enjoyed this book very much, and Walker is definitely up in my top three of favorites in the baseball series!

Walker and Kate made me swoon and cry and laugh and want to punch something, this story had all the feels. A very well written story

The grumpy catcher has met his match. Kate is hired on with the Bobbies Baseball team helping with the players image and community involvement. Of course her biggest hurdle is getting the least-liked player into better standings not only with the the organization, but with the fans as well. He's known for getting hot under the collar. Walker doesn't think he needs help, and he certainly doesn't want to be shoved into the spotlight anymore than he is already... but he does find himself wanting to please this new girl. He's a bit misunderstood, but she manages to see beneath the the surface. As the two get to know each other their attraction grows, unfortunately, nothing can come of it as it is against company policy, and they could lose their jobs, which neither want to do of course. Lets just say, they handle things the best ways possible. There's some heartache. There are some laughs, but this particular book doesn't have quite as much humor as the others. Mostly due to the more subdued nature of the story. (There is a tragedy that is mentioned throughout the book.. which happens to be a trigger for the characters and part of the reason for some bad behaviors.) There is lots of steamy content (suitable for mature readers.) There is also a little bit of swoon involved. ;) There is a little bit of a surprise twist. It's a well written story that is easy to read. Hard to put down. It alternates between POVs.
