Boy howdy did I love this book. I knew I would enjoy Emmett's book after reading about him in the three previous books, I knew he would have a hard, sad history and I love that he found someone to help him heal his heart. Hazel and Emmett are perfect for each other. She needed him and his cinnamon roll, golden retriever ways (once he let her in, anyway lol) and he needed her and her gentle, sweet spirit. I love that they saw each other and their own needs, that he saw that she needed someone to help carry her burdens and support her, and she saw that he needed someone who was real and present and who loved this daughter.
One thing I love about Annah's writing is how well she brings the sweet, cozy vibes. Even given the grumpy vibes on occasion, they still give you that cozy home feeling. I'm going to miss this group of friends when we're done with them.

Quick Summary: A nanny đź’– a baseball player +1
My Review: The Double Play by Annah Conwell is book #4 in the More Than a Game series. It is scheduled for release on 6/24/25.
About the Book: "I have no business falling in love with Emmett Foster...an incredibly wealthy professional baseball player who’s ten years older than me and has a daughter.
I find myself catching feelings..."
In My Own Words: A young woman from a hard knocks family situation becomes the nanny to a superstar athlete's daughter. Before she knows it, she finds herself in like then love with a man who swore he would never marry again.
About the Audiobook: This novel was narrated by Tim Paige and Charlotte North. The duo made the listening experiencing both enjoyable and entertaining.
My Final Say: This fast-paced grumpy/sunshine romance was short and sweet. The insta-attraction to love relationship between Emmett and Hazel progressed naturally. Their ready made family was special. It was nice seeing how the found family became a home for each member.
This novel read much like a standalone, however, there seemed to be a couple of dangling threads that might possibly tie into other books in the series. While I was able to read without confusion, I was left wondering about some of the situations presented. I plan to familiarize myself with the preceding books, in order to see what I may be missing.
Other: Readers who enjoy sports romances, close proximity work situations, grumpy/sunshine relationships, age gap insta-love scenarios, and single dad finds a partner tropes will like this story.
Rating: 3/5

3.5 stars rounded to 4. After seeing Emmett’s grumpiness over the last 3 books of this series, I was looking forward to seeing him fall in love. I wasn’t sure who could break that shell but Hazel’s sweetness and love for his daughter did it. While I enjoyed the sweet moments between them, I felt like it needed a little more development. They flip the switch pretty quickly from attraction to deep feelings and I would have liked to see more time spent getting to know each other. I did love June and the found family aspect of the story.

Plot: After Hazel’s Nanny family moves states, she is left finding another job. When she gets hired to work for Emmet and his sweet 5 year old, June, she feels like she’s landed back on her feet. She doesn’t fail to notice how attractive Emmet is, but doesn’t want to risk her job. After unknowingly giving Emmet the “I love you” sign with his daughter, all bets are off. They both try to deny the budding feelings for one another, but are scared of what could happen for each of them. How will they continue to work together? What about little June? Can Emmet trust a woman again?
What I liked: what’s not to like?! This book was the ultimate 5 star read for me. I will read every Annah Conwell book until the day I die. Emmet was such a softie in all the right ways. The ultimate cinnamon roll man. Hazel was also so fun with June. That relationship was such a fun addition to this story. I loved how they didn’t try to hold themselves back from their feelings for an unreasonably insane amount of time, either.
What I didn’t like: I don’t even know. No notes.
Swearing: none
Physical intimacy level: swoony, closed door
Star rating: 5 stars
Trope: grumpy/sunshine, boss/employee, single dad, sports romance, baseball romance

Single dad baseball players? Sign me up. I’m a sucker for a single dad romance and have honestly been needing more baseball romances in my life. I love this sports world that Annah Conwell has created and I love the found family in this one because it’s a bit unique for a sports romance in my opinion. While Emmett did have a friend on his baseball team, his found family of athletes consisted of guys who played other sports and I thought that was so cool. And of course a sweet little connection for this whole series.
I really loved Hazel and I feel like she is relatable in so many ways. Hazel is a caretaker and always has been and has no desire to be a burden to anyone. So she tries to shoulder everything on her own. I loved how Emmett just laid it all out there and continued to show up and take care of her. When these two got together it was really sweet to watch Emmett let his walls down for her and treat her well and for Hazel to finally have someone she could lean on. I did feel like they got together pretty quickly. Like I felt like they went from barwly acknowledging their feelings to themselves to flirting with each other and basically dating. But their time together was really sweet and I loved Hazel’s dynamic with June.
I’m excited to read more of Annah’s work! Thank you so much for the ARC!
