Enjoyed this one in the series - an easy and enjoyable time period mystery piece.

This is the 16th book in the series - the longest series I’ve ever read - with another due next spring. I loved this one and am anxious to find out what’s next for Maisie as this book took place still somewhat early in WWII, ending in Dec ‘41.

I always look forward to the next book in the Maisie Dobbs series and was very happy to get my hands on this one as soon as it was released. However, I was slightly disappointed. There was not much mention of Maisie's family and private life, and the love affair with Mark was lacking in interest. Apart from my reservations, the coverage of the murder itself was meticulous, and the historical background of the second world war in London was well researched.

I adore this series. It seems to get better and better. A mystery, historical fiction, war time and characters that you root for.

As I imagine the folks who actually lived during WWII were, I am growing weary of the war-time setting. Well loved characters barely make an appearance, the new love interest was not developed any more at all (leaving me in the same position as I was in with the last book of "I am not a fan"), and Robbie Macfarlane was a straight up a$$h013 almost this entire book. It was also super slow paced for most of the book, and the pieces of the mystery were all suddenly revealed at the end vs. slowly accumulating throughout the narrative.

This one takes place in autumn 1941.  Young Freddie Hackett, who literally runs errands for a British intelligence unit, witnesses a murder, and only Maisie and her colleagues seem to believe him.  The writing is fine, but I have to suspect that I'm not the only reader who stops early to glance at the final pages to see who's going to survive the story.

dnf @ 30 percent. Could not take Maisie's Mary Sueness any longer. For me, there are so many books with better constructed female characters and that I gave myself permission to stop reading and stop the constant rolling of my eyes.
