It’s always fun to see an author get to return to a universe they’ve just finished - in this case, Fonda Lee returning to Janloon, and focusing on the older generation that we just barely saw in the original Jade War, and getting to expand on a seemingly small jade setter’s apprentice into a life spanning grudge involving the two biggest clans in Janloon, more about Shine, and abuse of the Abukei. Great novella, great crime story, and always fun to see Lee get to play around more in this universe.

This made me miss this whole world. I need more in the world for sure. There is also something soothing about the narrators voice that does this series.

4.5/5

A fun side adventure dipping back into familiar characters and seeing. The stakes were smaller but enjoyable

4.5 stars

I didn't realise just how much I missed this world until I started this book... and now I am very sad I have to leave it behind again.

While I absolutely devoured all the major clan politics in the main series, I really loved getting a fresh perspective from someone from a minor clan in this novella.
I was immediately reimmersed in this world and it was just an amazing ride all the way through.
Now, I wasn't expecting to get so invested in so few pages... but it's Fonda Lee, so I should've known better. The stakes were high, the plot was engaging and the character work was excellent, but is anyone really surprised by that at this point?!

I think you can read this novella at any time in your Greenbone journey, but I am personally really glad I read it after finishing the series. There are some cameos from characters that we've grown to love over the main books and it was amazing to see them back here. I don't think I would've been this emotionally invested if I wasn't already familiar with this world, its politics and the characters.

Another amazing instalment in the Greenbone Saga. My only complaint is that it was over too soon. I can't get enough of this world and of Fonda Lee's writing! Brilliant novella.

One benefit from being late to a series is that I start from the prequel world building and the origin story of the Clans, and Jade.

This short prequel focuses on Pulo, and how he learnt his craft from renowned Jade setter Isin.
We are introduced to the world of Jade which has mysterious power enhancing properties which give the Green Bones warriors the abilities to run the island of Janloons most powerful clans. Pulo does not have the ability to become a Warrior, but he can set and reset powerful Jade pieces which are won by duelling Green Bone warriors.

I really enjoyed the strong sense of justice, morality emitted from Pulo, who does not belong to the powerful clans; rather he is part of a neutral clan and seen as weaker (although his Master Isin is a greatly respected Jade setter across Janloon, and noone would mess with him).

If this is the appetiser before the series, I would say this has really made me buy the rest of the series.
