I really wanted to like this book...I was looking for that good ol' fashioned haunted house Halloween story. What I got was an intriguing, confusing, depressing novel that I felt like I wanted to finish but still am not 100% sure what I just read or why. At least the end kind of explained things and the staggered writing and blurbs were interesting, but overall this was a bit too depressing of a read for me. Wasn't crazy about the repetitive storyline either. The one glimmer of light in this whole story was at the very end... Silla and Gowan getting to try again for a happy ending this time, instead of the tragic one they have been plagued by for years and years.

And wait, wasn't Nori always writing about the Creeper Man playing hide and seek with her and sitting in her room...plus she met someone in the woods and got infected. So is the Creeper Man real? Or was that Silla? I'm confused.

Ugh the melodrama! And also it’s like a long long dream someone keeps dragging out. So tedious. Would have been an ok short story. I really am done with YA now.

I felt as though I'd been put through an emotional wringer by the end of this book, it certainly inspired some strong emotions. Main character Silla escapes with her little sister from an abusive father and a weak mother in London to her aunt's large, isolated house, La Baume. Things are happy for a while but then events take a sinister turn and Silla is forced to deal with her aunt's madness whilst protecting her sister amid fears for her own sanity. The writer tightens the screw of suspense gradually with each chapter and there's a massive twist in the plot that I really did not see coming - at all! There is a love story entwined around the fear but it's like no love story I've read before. Some profanity in the book and a very disquieting read so more suitable for older readers, this is a very dark story that begs to be read with the lights firmly switched on - I loved it.

First of all I want to start with a trigger warning for domestic abuse, suicide, starvation and gruesome death.

Ok so, what the hell happened? This book was filled with twists and turns and I really had no idea what was happening, or what would happen until the very end, and even then my mind was still blown.

The format of the book was unlike anything I've read before. Written from four different perspectives, the three sisters in 1980 back when they created The Creeper Man, Silla, Aunt Cath and Nori, each perspective is written in a different font and style which meant the narrator was easy to distinguish.

The entire book is split into six smaller books, with each chapter beginning with a poem and many including a "broken book entry" into which Silla writes in a sort of acrostic style, where some of the words are bold and form a new sentence when joined together.

While the book is definitely freaky, there is an overwhelming feeling of sorrow alongside it. Silla and Nori run away from home and their abusive father, only to end up escaping one evil and be thrust into another, despite everything seeming idyllic in the beginning. Once Silla and Nori become trapped in La Baume, their lives become horrifically monotonous and their days are virtually the same day in day out as things get progressively worse. But don't be fooled into thinking this would be boring. Each page had an undercurrent of total creepiness throughout, and I was totally enthralled with the story, desperate to see what would happen to the sisters.

Whilst I did feel empathy towards the characters, I didn't feel an attachment to any of them due to a serious case of distrust and unreliable narrator syndrome. Throughout the book we were exposed to many different versions of the truth, but which is really the truth?

There is so much depth and so many layers that are constantly peeled back and put back together throughout the story; I have so much admiration for Kurtagich's writing. Hints were dropped throughout the book which when I look back are so damn clever but I totally missed the first time around.

When I got to the end of the story it was seriously a "holy shit" moment. I couldn't believe the tale that Kurtagich had woven together. It was utterly dark, tense and exactly what I would consider a horror story to be, though what you expect in the beginning is definitely not what you get at the end.

I found myself constantly second guessing my thoughts, and would definitely class The Creeper Man as a psychological horror. It would make an awesome film but would be completely terrifying!

There isn't really much more that I can say without giving everything away so basically if you love creepy horror stories that will mess with your mind and keep you tucked firmly under your quilt with your lamp left on, then you need to read this book. This is the perfect read for Halloween night, just don't blame me if it gives you nightmares!

This book was not what I expected at all.
I liked the book a lot at first. The overall creepiness of the story was what kept me going and wanting to read more.
Then the story started dragging a bit. Itz added to the creepiness factor but it also started to felt repetitive and even boring.
And then ending was sad. It made me sad even if the conclusion wasn't that bad. I definitely didn't see it coming.

This contains spoilers
I kinda hated Nori most of the time. I get that it was mostly Sillas fault (and Cath's) but it was hard to care for her.
Silla an Nori scaped her abusive father and went to live with their aunt Cath in a big Manor where her mom and sister grew up. They are isolated from the town by a big forest and Cath tells them they can't go to the forest because theres a creeper man that will come and take them. Then Cath goes crazy and goes to live in the attic.
But was it just a tale? Why can't Silla get over the feeling that the trees are getting closer and creeping in? And is that the creeper man she sees in the forest?
I have to say, I wanted to like Gowan but I kept thinking he was going to betray them, or be a product of their imagination. Nothing further that the truth.

Spoiler!!
It turns out they were all dead. They were in Silla's own hell, because she couldn't forgive herself for letting her mother die by her father's hands the night they ran away. In reality, the creeper man was a fictional thing her mother and aunt invented to justify the death of their younger sister, Anne. And when Silla and Nori went to live with her, she also met Gowan and they fell in love. But with talks of a ear coming, Gowan left to gather supplies and her aunt finally lost it and hang herself in the attic.
Nori got sick when she helped a stranger in the woods and drank from his water, and died a week later, and Silla left herself starve to death. When Gowan finally got there, they were all dead.
And so Silla got stuck in purgatory, in a hell of her own making, reliving the past few months of her life but changing the story so that the creeper man was real. And this went on for years, until Gowan died and could enter her hell and help her forgive herself.
It was sad, at the end, because it was all about anger and sadness and regret. Not the spooky story I was in the mood for.
Still, it's a nice story and I enjoyed the ride.

3.5 stars. Horror is hard for me to rate. I did like elements of this one, but it also felt repetitive at times. It is a good read if you are looking for a spooky Halloween read.

2.5 - This book was great up until the end. I was hooked, and I stayed up late to finish it (which I haven’t done in a long time). Then, I got to the ending and I’m just like... wtf was that. It’s nowhere near what I guessed or hoped. The ending is such a weird curveball. I didn’t really want a happy, tied-in-bow they all lived happily ever after ending. I wanted a horror novel. However, the writing was great, and I loved the slight mixed-media aspect. I may pick up this authors future works after I check reviews to make sure the ending isn’t wack.

Intriguing and unique horror novel. I wasn't sure what was happening until the end. I love when that happens!
