after a couple of chapters I joked to my partner that amerika was 'like if dickens was good' then later found this quote from kafka himself:
'My intention was, as I now see, to write a dickens novel, enriched by the sharper lights which I took from our modern times, and by the pallid ones I would have found in my own interior.'
it reminds me of so many debut works by great novelists, filmmakers, musicians etc. where they haven't yet found their voice, or are still in the process of finding it, and so do an excellent version of someone else's.
I'm not sure anything that follows comes close to the brilliance of the first chapter ('the stoker') but amerika is still a fascinating, and incredibly funny read. at first glance conventional but containing a trangressive and surreal energy, with the seeds of ideas and styles that would later come to define him.

Karl shows up in New York harbor after being shipped away from Germany by his parents. They insisted he leave after he impregnated a servant out of wedlock. That makes Karl sound like a ruffian, but he's incredibly passive. Throughout the whole book, he makes maybe one choice - and even his tryst with the servant girl back home is described as though he were raped.
Karl's America feels like a dream. He tries to please everyone he meets, but nobody makes much sense. Karl believes in the American dream, though: all he needs to do to get ahead is work hard -- even if that means being a slave for a while.
Between its surreal plotting and passive protagonist, I don't know how Kafka makes this so tense and engaging. A lot of the book is spent describing the inane, feverish activity of its hellish america: the streets are overwhelmed, busboys rush up and down elevators for 12 hours straight, restaurants are clogged with furious chewers. It's interesting but exhausting. It's probably a success that the book made me feel suffocated and anxious, but it's also not my favorite reading experience ever.

"โรงละครโอกาโฮมา" เป็นบทจบของหนังสือเล่มนี้ มันมีบางช่วงตอนที่ดูขาดหายไป แต่พอได้อ่านแล้วเราก็เริ่มรู้สึกว่ามันไม่ใช่เรื่องจริงเสียเท่าไหร่ เหมือนกับมันเป็นแดนของความฝันที่คาร์คเขาฝันขึ้นมาทุกอย่างดูเป็นใจราวกับความหวังกำลังกลับเข้ามาในมือของเขาแต่คาร์คก็ได้เสียชื่อของเขาไปแล้วเป็นเพียง "นิโกร" ชื่อจากที่ทำงานเก่า สุดท้ายเขาก็นั่งรถไฟเดินทางไปยังสถานที่ใหม่กับความหวังอันแห้งแล้งนี้บนโรงละครที่เหมือนกับความฝัน
