I really enjoy Annette Marie's Guild Codex series both the original Spellbound and this newer Demonized spinoff. My only quibble is with the author's use of the word "mince". Her main characters mince here and mince there, and it pulls me out of the story every time. Since I just did a reread of all the books, it was glaringly obvious.
I'm sure she is using it to mean: to walk or move with short, affectedly dainty steps
But I would get pulled out of the story and spend a couple of minutes coming up with alternate words she could have used. I wish Ms Marie would add some variety to her character's movements and maybe leave the mincing for the kitchen.

I picked this up following a recommendation from Jessie Mihalik's blog and it proved to be such a treat, and what an opening chapter, I was hooked from the start. I loved the world and the unusual magic system, throw in some lashings of politics and I'm hooked. Robin was an incredibly endearing heroine, I always like seeing people choosing to do the right thing when it's not the easy thing and making mistakes along the way. Her social anxiety just made me want to give her a hug, I'm looking forward to seeing how she finds her place in the world. And the demon taming... Let's just say I am here. For. It.
The author's note at the end threw me for a loop - I wanted to carry on with Robin but I also hate having surprises spoiled. I made it a few chapters into book two before I decided to go back and give Tori a go which is turning out to be a great decision. I now have a large back catalogue to catch up on before carrying on with Robin and Zylas and I cannot wait. Thank you, Jessie Mihalik! (And Annette Marie, of course!)

In this new spin-off/side-series, I think Robin is actually a little more interesting than Tori, even if Robin is 'weaker' despite the fact that Tori is just a human and Robin is not.
I really enjoyed the slow development of Robin and the demon's 'relationship' in the beginning of this book. Howeer, once the storyline crossed over to the same storyline/timeline as the other series featuring Tori, my interest did lower a little bit. Luckily it picked back up at the very end.
I think it's very interesting that these two series are being written at the same time and are to be read at the same time by switching back and forth between them. Which series will I end up liking better? Right now it's a toss up, which is a nice problem to have.

“But how did they get a completely unresponsive demon to take a contract?”
By feeding him cookies and cake for two weeks, I silently answered.

This is my reread of the Demonized series because I started her Spellbound series and realized they weren't just related but intertwined and felt the urge to go back for this one and read them chronologically. Gotta say, like two years later and I still love it. Robin and Zylas are so good together in such a weird way. Zylas is a demon, he doesn't understand humanity, same can be said for Robin on demons but it's easier for us to empathize with the human of course. But the beautiful part of this series is that we get to see him figuring it all out. And it's so subtle and creative the way that she introduces elements of humanity into his behavior without overtly stating that he was learning, you just get to see him morph into his humanity.
So I'm a big fan, probably a bigger fan of this one than Spellbound as I feel that Robin is more relatable and I'm just a huge fan of their relationship dynamic.
