nishino was too unlikeable for me to really enjoy this book. the best part of it, in my opinion, was getting to know the women he romanced every chapter. i like complicated characters, but he did too many irredeemable things for me to feel anything but contempt for him.
I’m struggling to figure out the purpose if this novel. On the one hand, the focus on the women could be a critique of womanizers/perverts but also the tone felt too light-hearted and the portrayal of Nishino too rosy considering he sexually assaults women
I actually found this book incredibly boring. I just couldn’t connect to the characters and situations, and when I began to get closer, the story would be over. Not for me.
Having the story told through the perspectives of different women who Nishino met throughout his life was interesting, though he wasn't very interesting at all. Each woman has a different view of themselves and of Nishino and what he represents, and I was interested to see how the stories related (if at all), and what the final section would entail and how it would end. No great descriptions, but the feelings of sadness, nostalgia, confusion, jealousy, and emotional abuse are done well.

While I was reading this book I strongly felt that it looked like it was written by a man?? 😭 but maybe it's just that the author really knows how to write men.
Either way, overall I felt that it didn't give me everything I was looking for.

I thought this was such an interesting look at relationships. From the viewpoint of different women who knew and loved (maybe) Nishino at different points in his life, we get to see a portrait of a really strange and selfish man. What I liked most was each woman had a different perspective on their relationship with him, but you see a lot of the same behaviors from him from woman to woman. From the way he tells them they’re “not like other women” to his constant two timing, this guy doesn’t change. There were a few chapters that felt a little long, but overall I really enjoyed each of them. Also the food descriptions were fantastic.
