“Happiness is a choice. It’s just not for sale.”

This is our August pick for our bookclub and I’m so very glad we read it. Even more exciting is that the author herself will be video chatting with us, at our monthly meeting next week!

I truly didn’t know what our little bookclub would do and how we’d run it, etc but, it’s turned into a night I always look forward to! And now, we have a wonderful author that will be joining us, how stinking cool is that??

Do you hold grudges? Could you hold one for over 18 years and still want to get revenge? That’s a question I keep going back to with this book, would I want to?

It truly works for this book though, it gives lots of twists and turns and makes you understand Kerrie’s heart more. In the end her heart becomes more invested in relationships and possibly wanting more than just a career.

I enjoyed the deceit mixed with friendships and love. It wasn’t just about exacting revenge on someone, it was everything mixed together. It felt more real and what could happen in real life.

This is my first book by Emily Liebert and I’m super excited to read more from her!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I’d love to see a sequel possibly. I think there are enough leftovers to put one together but, in the end it gave my heart hope for Kerrie and her life.

There are few things I love more than suspense novels that have strong characters and stories. The ones that don’t rely on suspense to steer the plot.

Olivia/Kerrie and Jordan/Jordana were robust, strong and deeply flawed characters. The revelations of their history was perfectly tied together and laid out.

I didn’t know who I was rooting for more. I wanted them both to “win” and come out on top.

As with most suspense novels, the ending came fast and furious and I wanted more. All the best books leave me wanting more because I’ve connected with the characters.

Thank you to Gallery books and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

To be honest, I wasn't expecting a whole lot from Emily Liebert's Pretty Revenge. Liebert was an unknown author to me and I had not seen much buzz surrounding this book when it was published. However, I found myself pleasantly surprised by this suspense novel about a woman taking revenge on her childhood nemesis.

When Kerrie O'Malley sees Jordana Pierson on television promoting her elite wedding planning business, Kerrie sees red. Jordana was her childhood neighbor, but not only that, Jordana committed an unthinkable act while staying at Kerrie's house one night, and in effect, ruined Kerrie's life. Kerrie, hellbent on getting revenge, infiltrates Jordana's life, landing a plum role at Jordana's business and becoming her right hand woman. But little does Jordana know that Kerrie is a snake in the grass, hellbent on getting revenge. When the claws are out, who will come out on top?

Pretty Revenge was a pretty entertaining read! Liebert has solid character development and evenly moves the plot of this novel along, making for a satisfying reading experience. Pretty Revenge doesn't shy away from exposing the unfortunate down and dirty side of women's relationships, and while it doesn't always show women in the best light - instead painting them as catty and selfish - the book sure was a lot of fun!

*I received a free copy of Pretty Revenge from Gallery Books via Edelweiss. This has in no way influenced my review which is honest and unbiased.*

3.5 stars
Pretty Revenge has a lot of very interesting aspects going for it! And one of those aspects is that we get chapters from either Jordana’s or Kerrie’s point of view. They both feel like they have a very difficult life, and have had to make some hard choices. However, Kerrie is out for revenge. Because when she was only 12 years old, Jordana took everything from her.
I loved that even as the characters were rather careful in their interactions in the beginning, they actually grew to love and respect each other. And the way Kerrie changed her appearance so that she could get close to Jordana made me root for her.
At the same time, while I could understand her thirst for revenge, I also kind of felt like it would have been better for her to just leave the past in the past.
As Kerrie forged new relationships, and really grew into herself, I liked a lot about her. Her drive, her intelligence, her street-smarts, and her organisation skills were excellent. And she was very methodological in everything she did.
Overall, Pretty Revenge is a good story, and I stayed up until 1 am to finish reading. There was a lot going on, and I really needed to know how it would all end.

I have to admit, I was not blown away by this one. The book had a lot of promise based on the primary theme but it didn't deliver. It never bodes well for me when I realize I'm struggling to maintain interest in a book.

First of all, if you are trying to get revenge you would think she would have a bigger plan than the little minor things she did like erased messages. The book drags to make you understand both women and what they went through as children to build up to a massive climax that doesn't happen. Instead it seems like the ending was just a rushed jumble to just wrap everything up in a neat unrealistic bow quickly to save time.

Kerrie is not happy with her life, she got a stale relationship and now jobless she wants a change and when she hear Jordana’s voice on tv a plan forms.

Jordana grew up in a bad house hold and was desperate to break free of her fathers grip so she does something that sets Kerrie’s life and future completely off the course imagined. Kerrie blames Jordana for everything that has happened to her because in her mind it all started with the incident Jordana was responsible for.

The writing of this was good and I really enjoyed the split perspectives, I would say this is more of a light mystery more contemporary. I was expecting a Physiological thriller but it wasn’t, regardless I did enjoy this. Kerries applies for an assistant job to get close to Jordana to ruin her life like she did to her. An eye for an eye.

The build up was good, met Daniel who we like and root for and who Kerrie get besotted by. There a few side characters you kind of mull over but there was nothing really there to give them some of the spot light. Apart from Sarah who was a fun edition and who was there to actually help the plot.

All in all I liked how the story unfolds and how it was told, I just wish that the reveal was more dramatic and it felt weird that everything tied up in to a neat little bow. I fell like after everything that happened there would still be a lot of things up in the air.

I enjoyed reading this ebook, it's not a story you should take as a serious physiological thriller. It has some fun character and I just went with it to see where things would come out. Whether a person would go to the lengths Olivia was willing to just for revenge, I'm not so sure. But it was a quick read and I liked it!

just a reminder to the writer of adult fiction that centers on women: there are more hairstyles than chignons.
