The Name of the Rose is an intresting novel. It certainly has themes, although I would embarass myself if I tried to list them.

I liked the character of William, the protagonist of the novel. His detective skills were quite intresting.

I did not love reading this, I felt bored a few times and struggled to motivate myself to keep reading. That's not to say that the book is badly written, it's a me issue.

I do think that I would be interested in reading a shorter book by Umberto Eco, maybe a history on Italian heresies. That could be very fun, although obviously me saying I'd like an unwritten book is a useless statement in some ways. Consider it praise for the man's ability to captivate me with his nerd facts.

There are weird moments in the book, of the two major plots I felt like both resolve well, but both left me dissatisfied during their midpoints.

I’ve had this book for almost 20 years and finally read it. The blurb on the back was interesting enough for me to read it, but sometimes I had a hard time following what was happening in the narration. My favorite parts all related to the mystery of the murders as well as the library. I am glad to have read it.

A reread, not my first.

Ah, we know who did it and we have a pretty good guess as to why; we can even assemble the how if we're careful, before we get to the end. It's the poignancy of loves lost, mentors silenced by time, learning destroyed by those meant to protect it, the passing of heresies worthy of burning men alive into darkness, the decay of things, the translation, retranslation, mistranslation, falsity, fantasy...nostalgic without being oversimplified. I love this book. I even liked the new translation. RIP, William Weaver.

Absolutely not for me. The plot is cool and exciting but there is so much info dumping happening alllllllllllllllllll the time. I don't care about the nuances of Christiandom in the middle ages, all these different orders with a bunch of people and names. I couldn't even get it straight why there was a conflict between the pope and the emperor. Like, chill out. Also there is so many boring descriptions of just random shit, like the carvings in the church, which give the main character hallucinations about heaven and hell (fuck's sake) or the illuminations on a book (described in absolute detail for pages and pages. After more than halfway through the book i decided to spare myself the pain of the boring shit and just skip whenever I saw a long block of text (like the part where the main character is infatuated and discusses it at length with himself, or when Jorge goes on a multi-page monologue about sin). Anyway it is a pity because if all that were removed, it would be a cool read. But naur soz bye.
