Phenomenal! I love everything about this book. Deep cut polyglot Church lore, monastic mystery, fanaticism and semiotics. Cannot wait to re-read this one once some of the details have faded. 10/10
Didn't care for this one. Too wordy. Like an over explained Sherlock Holmes.

I have enjoyed what I have encountered of Eco's ideas around list-making (The Infinity of Lists). I thought I dug him on books and libraries, but maybe I have him muddled with Borges there.
Of course both concepts hit me while reading TNOTR. On the latter, the guy has obviously read a lot, and thinks a lot about writing and books and libraries. Those are right in my wheelhouse. But, on the former, he just goes on and on, and I couldn't follow the great many characters in the abbey, let alone how they related to the geopolitics, about which it assumed way too much.
So it didn't succeed for me insofar it's an exhibition of erudition, far overdone.

Actually what I'm probably remembering is mostly a project called '1002' which was essentially a send-up of TNOTR as a Doctor Who story. It involved a monastery, certes, but set in Burgundy at the time that King Robert of France staked his (successful) claim to that historic territory. It also involved a young, stranded alien creature (what is it with DW and space animals leaving their litters all over Earth?) which warps Time as a defence mechanism while waiting for its Mum to come and pick it up. There are burnings. Hence the subtitle, Arson Planet. As to this novel I did wonder about the apparent dig at JL Borges who I thought everyone had down as a good egg, as generally liked as Bob Ross only without the hair and the happy little trees.

An intriguing murder mystery, happening amongst the ecclesiastical politics of the early 14th century.
The pace of the story at the start is slow. If you don't like the idea of a book set in this time, the quality of the murder mystery is probably not good enough to overcome this.
For anyone with some knowledge of Latin, the book also provides a good opportunity to test this!
