I've picked up a few different books in the last month, searching for a good adventure with an interesting female protagonist, but I was disappointed every time. They always devolved into semi-erotica with a flat story arch and boring main characters. But this one... Born in Fire was a breath of fresh air. Reagan was sassy, fun, tough, and independent. I love her attitude and her sense of humor. I enjoyed the way the world was constructed and the mystery aspect of the plot. It was a great book, and I'm going to pick up the next one right now.

This one caught my eye while I was in the middle of another book and wouldn't turn me loose! Read it (400+ pages) in basically a day. It's the first in a trilogy, and if you like Kate Daniels or Mercy Thompson, I think this is one for you! Reagan is a tough supernatural bounty hunter heroine. The world building is impressive, and there is some laugh-out-loud humor here as well. Great cast of characters! Look forward to #2!
Book appeared mostly error free, there were a few spots where there was an extra word or the wrong spelling used (the bed was "tussled" instead of "tousled"). The mystery aspect was interesting, tracking all the strands and finding how they're connected in the web. The pacing felt smooth for the most part. Then end scene in her house was a bit confusing since she was supposed to be drunk off her ass - apparently it makes sense for her to make it home fine and have a conversation outside with her neighbor but once she gets into her house she's so drunk she's seeing double? Some people commented they didn't appreciate the "other woman" sex toward the beginning since this is supposed to be a slow-burn between Reagan and Darius, but at the time of that scene while they had gotten physically close at one moment when Reagan was arguably high, they did not "like" each other and were busy antagonizing each other. While a bit distasteful perhaps (and tied to my next point), I wouldn't classify it as "other woman" behavior since they were not in a relationship or even regarding each other as potential partners.
I'm not sure how much I like some books (like this one) using the vampire bite as an extreme aphrodisiac type feeling. Normally it is at the least painless, sometimes pleasurable, but I don't feel like it should be tied to bite=sex. It can be involved in sex scenes but it shouldn't be a given.
I like Reagan mostly, and the way she gets into taxis and rideshares in her bounty hunter garb like Deadpool is entertaining, but she's pretty antagonistic. She jumps straight to confrontational instead of just talking normally with anyone. She doesn't listen. The directions to the vampire lair said knock and wait - her knock is to kick down the gate, then she waits two seconds and just strolls in threatening people. Darius asks her to wait ONE DAY for him to come back and instead she arms herself and does what she wants. She also doesn't want anyone to know what she is but when she's working with Darius the ELDER vampire she starts using her abilities before they even get to danger and what, expects him not to notice? Meanwhile against the mage before meeting the vampires she was so careful she pretended to apply a spell to her sword. Then in front of Darius she relaxes in a fireball spell that "feels like a sauna". She is very wishy-washy on her intent to remain hidden. Sometimes she's really smart, like piecing the mystery together, then others she's kind of stupid. She finds the important rooms with her stash of items are all unharmed while the rest of her house is burnt and just decides to open a stash anyway using her special magic no one can hear about.
We start the novel with what type of supernatural the main character Reagan is being a mystery - she knows, but won't tell anyone and apparently is worried someone will tell her father? But there's no birth certificate, no records on her, and no one knows who or what she really is so I guess he'd just find out thru the grape vine? She has a lot of power that she does her best to keep secret, so other than other supernaturals being able to "smell" the power on her, no one pays her any mind. She's fire proof (except her clothes/hair?), doesn't need to breath to live, and can sense and nullify magic spells.
Reagan works as a bounty hunter for the government agency tasked with keeping supernaturals a secret. There is also a supernatural task force run by the elves and enforced by the shifters but they don't play nice. She has no records so she has to either buy papers like her boss tells her to do or she has to keep working as a bounty hunter. Her mark is taken by a group of vampires and then they want to hire her for an undisclosed job where she would partner with a vampire and be paid $50,000 - she's leery but accepts.

Essentially this is an interconnected world with 4 separate series with overlapping characters. The first series follows Reagan an unspecified supernatural creature and bounty hunter working in New Orleans. She is a badass loner who eventually gets friends she just cannot shake. I really like the way that Breene writes women, they are total badasses but never loose the ability to be feminine or one dimensional. Also they don’t usually make dumbass decisions and nothing pisses me off more than stupid decision making. The series does have an over lapping narrative but for the most part each book is a pretty well contained story so no major cliffhangers. If you are in the market for a fun fantasy (set in this world? urban fantasy?) I would recommend it.
I was surprised how this book grew on me. I have never read this author before and was looking for a Graphic Audio production that had plenty of finished books in its series. I really enjoyed it! I don’t know what everyone else is talking about when they say they didn’t finish or hated it. I found myself laughing out loud at random times. The book read like a good movie, especially since I didn’t have any expectations going into it.

If you like urban fantasy with a bit of humor, check this book out. The heroine is likeable and she kicks butt. There is nice banner and the beginnings of a good world top be immersed in.

Cue an extremely long sigh.
This book... y'all I can't.
It wasn't that it was bad but I feel like it could have been LOAAADS better. I did like all the hinting at who Reagan's father and then the final big reveal. Her powers were awesome as were her detectice skills. But she was like an overpowered boss in a video game. I guess that stems from her father's bloodline tied in with her mom's magical prowess.
Her weird attempts at catch phrases was annoying. The relationship with Darius I didn't fully understand, I did want some sort of development in that instead of just the occasional dry humping and "MMMM YOU SMELL GOOD WHAT ARE YOU?" Type stuff. Even if all they did was remain badass bounty hunter teammates would have been better than the ending we got.
Reagan is a boss ass bitch and she knows it but shes also pretty immature while Darius is all prim and proper except when for whatever reason they begin to get all hot and heavy.
????
The book scenes seemed to jump around a lot, I was reading on kindle and though I had somehow skipped pages and had to go back and decipher what in the world was going on
Fight scenes were super cool
Characters and Character development... not so much
Come for the promise of bounty hunters and elder vampires... stay for the sword fights and jokes about bringing guns to them.
