Cute enough

Picked up around a third into it

Is a struggle for me to read this at first. Felt like it was slow and it had a lot of world building but not a lot of interesting plot mixed in. Then, around a third of the way through it really seemed to pick up and I got more interested. I enjoyed the ending.

This review covers the whole Trilogy.

I suppose this series was OK. It definitely wasn’t a favorite of the Breene series I’ve read so far. I thought the world was interesting enough. And I liked the main character well enough. But I was just kind of underwhelming on the whole. Honestly, the side characters were my favorite part of the whole thing, and when the heroine and hero can so easily be outshone, there’s a problem of some sort.

I initially liked Reagan’s snark. But eventually, it just became a schtick. I liked that she’s strong and resourceful. But eventually, she just became so overpowered that the deus ex machina saves became the norm rather than the exception. I liked the love interest, but I never really felt the romance develop.

So, all in all, I’d call this a middling read. It’s not bad enough that I regret reading it. But it’s also not good enough that I continued into the next part of the series (focusing on Penny), even though I have it.

I listened to the graphic audio version of this book and really enjoyed it! This was a nice easy read full of intrigue and twists. A great palate cleanser after reading the first three Red Rising books!

It was good! I liked how we were given information but there are still some mysteries.

This review is specifically for the GraphicAudio production of Born in Fire. The DDVN series is one of my comfort reads, and this book in particular is a go-to for getting out of a reading slump, so listening to it as a full cast performance sounded amazing. But while this series is a 5 stars all around for me, there were things about the GraphicAudio that just didn't work well for me as a listener.

To be clear, the casting and performances of each and every voice actor was amazing! Reagan was just as I imagined her! I loved listening to a full cast performance of this book and the adaptation of the book into a script was so well done, I didn't even notice and difference from reading.

For me, the issues comes with the background sounds added to the performance: footsteps while characters are walking and music in the background of the bar or for setting the scene. Those sounds were too loud in comparison to the voices that I found it distracting, particularly the footsteps. I will listen to another GraphicAudio production from a different series to see if it was just this single book or if as a neurodiverse listener, the format just doesn't work well for me.

This all being said, it was incredibly difficult to rate this audiobook. The story and performance by the narrators were easily 5 stars, it's only the postproduction editing with sound effects that I had trouble with. I'm keeping my book rating of 5 stars for Goodreads because of the amazing story, but give the GraphicAudio on Audible 4 stars.

Cute, fun
