Loved the 1 2 3 of this and ached for more 4, but of course there was 4 all through 1 2 and 3.

It honestly felt very unnecessary with the exception of the last bit. Over half the book was in Sam Pearlman's point of view which I didn't enjoy and two highly unnecessary age gap relationships were explored. Just.. yeah not worth my time.

I'm well aware that these books are quite unpopular for justifiable reasons, BUT.
Yes, this is not for everyone, yes, there are some very, very, questionable elements, but you can't argue that the writing shines through all that. Andre Aciman delivers some of the most gut wrenching lines like it won't ruin your day, and that's incredible to me.
I read cmbyn 6 years ago, and I didn't enjoy it that much, but looking back I was just too young to appreciate the writing by itself, regardless to the story being told. The film also helped, since the last minutes invoked such emotion with just a character looking into a fire(props to timothee chalamet because that level of emotion so easily was crazy).
It's the beginning of the year, and I like to start with short books, and this was a good choice for that.
If you enjoy good writing, or just want some really good lines that will put you in an existential crisis, try it out.

If you're expecting more elio and oliver, this book isnt that. I do think its a wonderful book though and I thoroughly enjoyed samuels chapter. Aciman knows how to write about longing like no other. Only reason its not 5 stars was because I didnt enjoy elios chapter that much. And I do think the 'im too old for you' blah blah trope is repeated a bit too much. Still loved it though
edit: 5 stars now. I cant stop thinking about this book. I love the way aciman writes about love and yearning.

I’ve found this book to be infuriatingly bad. Conversations feel weird, not normal at all, very cumbersome and uncharacteristic of people who are 50 years old. First the father, who the fuck says they want children with you on the second date. The idea of soulmates in this book is very important to the author, but honestly i dont get where he’s coming from. The end is not surprising at all given the theme of soulmates and it is of course not at all up to expectations. 35 years they haven’t forgotten each other and they haven’t stopped thinking about their past relationship - come on. Bring some realism in it. Frankly I am triggered.
