One of the big plot points was obvious to me from the beginning, and I didn’t mind. The other big plot point I knew was coming because I read the acknowledgments first, as I tend to do,
but still missed how it happened and who it was
.

Even with the spoilers, I still found this little town and its drama fascinating.

A sapphic YA book with practical magic vibes. Ace/aro representation. Cute and sweet. Writing wasn’t anything new, but the story was comforting. If you are gay and have lived in a little coastal town, you might enjoy. And what? No homophobia or coming out plot?! Content warning for SA

I love the magical realism. It has everything that makes this a cozy read like; magic, 300 year old bird, small town on an island, and having a strong family bond. There was great representation of the Lgbtq in many of the characters. I enjoyed the first half of the story.

I wish we could learn more about Harrison, Vira, and Prue because as side characters, played such a big role. Also I understand the significance for the climax part but wish there was another reason as to why things went south. I wasn't expecting it. Then the ending felt rush and too short. Everything was tied in a nice bow. We didn't get a chance to see how many of the relationships between the characters resolved in the end like Georgina and Prue or Georgina and Mary.

Be careful reading some of the reviews before reading the book. I'm glad I didn't look at them because many people were spoiling it. If you know you know.

A book recommended by Emma - I liked the coming of age narrative but it felt a bit too young for my stage in life for it to be relatable.

I liked the depiction of island life but I didn’t love the mystery of its geographical whereabouts - I think somewhere off the east coast of the USA?

The inclusion of “magic powers” would not normally interest me but I liked it in this book.

Towards the end the book deals with some heavy themes. I like the attitude of the characters and in turn the author in seeking to advocate a modern day point of view in what seems to be quite a timeless piece of writing.
