What a creepy, weird little book.
Steve is an anxious, worried kid who's family is in a bit of upheaval after the birth of their new baby who has medical challenges.
When the wasp queen in the nest outside the baby's window offers to "fix" his little brother, Steve says yes without really knowing what yes entails.
So deliciously creepy...and the cover is fabulous.

That was ... weird.
I listened to this as an audiobook. It's pretty short.
It's a story about a boy going through a tough summer - his family is stressing over the birth of their newest member, as the baby has some unfortunate congenital health problems that could be fatal. The narrator is a young boy, and has difficulties himself with anxiety with OCD tendencies and nightmares. He's trying to cope with all that and the tense dynamics within his family. He has a dislike of the wasps around his home, and after getting stung, finds he is anaphylactically allergic. He starts having strange dreams, and has to decide whether or not to keep the damage and unknown that comes with a real, messy life or to switch it out for something fabricated, but perfect. Which is better? Which is worth fighting, worth dying for?

I would put this into the category of Coraline - wildly fantastic and scary at the same time. Wasps, Hives, a mystery knife sharpener, and Jon Klassen's dark illustrations just combine for an eerie tale about a baby. Steve's attempt to save the family's real baby kept me turning pages. No super moral lesson here except the weakness of humans to want perfection, and to say yes to something before they think of all of the ramifications.
