Raise The Titanic

Clive Cussler

3.64 AVERAGE

The United States and Soviet Russia both want the same thing: Byzantium, and there is only one place they can get it, by raising the R.M.S Titanic. This story follows a group of government men from both Soviet Russia and the United States, the former led by Prevlov and the latter by Gene Seagram and the renowned Dirk Pitt, as they struggle with each other over who really gets the Byzantium and the Titanic. The National Underwater and Marine Agency and the top-secret Meta Section are the founders of the Sicilian Project, for which the Byzantium is necessary. The Byzantium will be used to create a sort of dome over America, and would be impenetrable by any kind of missile. Seagram, Pitt, and their crew deep-sea dive, discovering a cornet belonging to one of the band members of the Titanic, which then lead them to the actual ship itself. From there on out, they have to figure out a way to raise the Titanic, stop the Russians, and free their teammates from certain death, all during the middle of fearsome Hurricane Amanda.

I really loved this book. It was an amazing combination of action and science- fiction, with just a little bit of romance. It was suspenseful as well, and I couldn’t put it down, not even to sleep. If you are looking for a new book or series to read, I highly recommend the Adventures of Dirk Pitt by Clive Cussler. Cussler’s writing style is phenomenal, I can vividly see the scenes in my head as I read.

I would recommend this book more to the boys than girls, because many of the main characters are men. However, girls definitely could enjoy Raise the Titanic! because it’s a great adventure. I would also recommend this book to anyone who loves action, sci-fi, and a little bit of mystery, just enough to make you think.

This was a great Dirk Pitt novel- a very sci-fi approach to his works. Still, a good read for someone looking to get into the Pitt universe.

Over the top, and now, with the discovery of the real Titanic, superfluous, this is nevertheless an amusing diversion. Not a bad read, but somewhat dated and definitely a product of it's time.

Once again...OH the chauvinism (See my post on Iceberg). Less than before, this feels like the later Pitt novels. We have a grand, world-scale scheme that only Dirk Pitt can accomplish. Plus, there are darned-pesky Soviets.

“A dollar for your thoughts.”
She opened her eyes and was greeted by the grinning and freshly shaven face of Dirk Pitt.
“A dollar? I thought it used to be a penny.”
“Inflation strikes everything, sooner or later.”

*** a 3 star review is still a positive review. I consider a three star review to be more of a positive-neutral review.

I enjoyed this, well the last half of it anyhow. It took me a really long time to get into this book. I was really excited about a book about the raising of the mighty Titanic from its ocean depths. But, this just seemed a little underwhelming. It took ages for the story to pinpoint its direction, and the titanic wasn’t even mentioned until approximately halfway. But the plot was okay, if not a bit jumpy.

I like the fact that Clive Cussler can do action. He can do action in books really, really well. And he did again. Once his books get going, they are good, it’s just waiting for the peak of the book, which always seems to be near the end.

I do, however, enjoy Dirk Pitt’s adventures, no matter how over the top and unbelievable they are! Also, considering this was written before the wreckage of the titanic was located, he managed to get a lot of information correct! When fiction becomes fact.

A classic 70’s story based on salvaging the titanic for a rare mineral needed for the Cold War. Actually a surprisingly good story, if very old fashioned regarding its views of women.

Oh this trip down memory lane.
Amazing how the one constant in my life is books. Almost all the books I have read throughout my life have been adventure, suspense and mystery.
Does anyone remember the Nick Carter books? Yep, I read every one of them back in the 1970's.
Back to this book.
I remember enjoying it. Loved the action and suspense. I also remember thinking Dirk Pit was a bit like Nick Carter. For me, a young adult, they were both HOT!
I loved the adventures Dirk Pitt took me on. I actually learned a lot about the world and some history from these books.
