ah man, re-reading this while knowing book 3 won't be out til september was mistake.

why are books translated from french so much better? are the french all fantastic storytellers? these books are utterly delightful: unique, well-paced, excellent characters, unpredictable. and like any good book series, each individual book is a cohesive whole, yet each book leaves you longing for the next one. I dearly love these; they deserve much more general popularity and praise than they've received.

I liked the originality, I’m a little sad that the story wasn’t a cohesive whole.

This is not the type of book you’re meant to fly through.

This is one that you’re meant to sit with, let yourself cozily sink into, and savor.

If you don’t love vividly descriptive world building this one probably isn’t going to be for you… but for those of us who really enjoy that type of thing, this one feels special. The plot line wasn’t necessarily fast, but it baited me just enough to have questions that needed answers. It definitely takes a long time to really get going, but I found myself enjoying the ride.

The magic system is intriguing, I wish I got to see a bit more of that, and hope to in the following books. There was a gothic almost caraval type feeling going on. Steady character development, and a whirlwind of an adventure. I really love our FMC Ophelia, and the tension between her and thorn…. phew i’m along for the ride on this slow burn.

This whole thing book felt like a fever dream, and has made a quite a lasting impression on me.

Classism
Ancient Artifacts
Portal Magic
Gothic/Gaslamp Fantasy
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Felt slow, wasn't engaged by the character relations - felt too obsessive around the betrothal and the main character didn't show any agency.

I'm not in the mood for the book right now. Just want to read fluffy romance

2,5
