I loved this book so much the first time I read it and this time was no different. Even three years later my view of it is much unchanged.

Not the best idea to leave all your most loveable characters behind at home while your MC goes off on sequel adventures with an annoying little boy. But I loved the way the romance was handled (though I wish there was a bit more of it)
I also personally hate themind control stuff because it gives me the heebie jeebies which left me rushing for a resolution and finding it really dragged on in the middle
I also personally hate the
shadow scale is phenomenal. from the plot to the worldbuilding to the characters, i loved every second of it. while reading, i often wondered how all the little plot lines could be connected, but the author wove them together beautifully. futhermore, this world is so unique and i absolutely adore the expansion given in this book. as for my beloveds, the characters: they are each different and diverse in many ways. seraphina, kiggs, glisselda, eskar, orma, comonot, and all the half-dragons and literally so many others how are there so many characters, anyways; you own my heart <33
OKAY, CAN I JUST SAY I AM THRILLED

Cute and lighthearted, I loved following all the characters, but they were not quite as developed as in the first book!
Another book that I really enjoyed until the last 20 pages or so--I need a book with a good ending! However, I found this sequel to be surprisingly strong for the most part. Seraphina's growth and understanding of herself seemed a little slow from a reader's perspective, but in reality most of us are slow to realize our own weaknesses and overcome them, so in that sense it was true to life. I loved meeting all of the other half dragons, and was surprised but pleased by the emergence of Jannoula as the enemy. I'll avoid specific spoilers, but after so much build-up to a Seraphina/Jannula standoff, the resolution was disappointingly easy. The story-line with Orma, however, was poignant and special. Overall, a good read.
3.5
This is a tough one to rate. I really loved the characters and story introduced in the first book, but I didn’t find this one lived up to that excellent setup. The whole is less than the sum of its, admittedly lovable, parts. I found the second half more compelling, but I wished we were allowed to see seraphina interact with the characters more, as there were a lot of very good ones. The plot of jannoula either dazzling or outright possessing everyone made for a very solitary story without enough introspection or character development for my tastes. Orma was one of my favorite characters in the first book and he was sidelined for the entirety of this book with only a sort of hopeful ending. Wasn’t a fan of that. I did, however, love the poly trio ending, though I wish I had seen more of it. Even just seeing the characters come to the decision would have had more emotional weight than the afterthought we’re given. All in all, I didn’t hate it, but it could have been better.

This book delves a lot deeper into the dragon and human mythology introduced in Seraphina, and it's much better for it. Whenever the book is focusing on those things, or on the dragon war, or the ityasaari problem, it's awesome. Whenever the book focuses on Seraphina's love life, I did not care. Honestly, I usually love a bit of romance in a book, but I found that this didn't seem authentic to me. Luckily, the relationships that are most important in the book are between Seraphina and her Uncle and Seraphina and Abdo. Overall, a great sequel.
