I found the characters somewhat underdeveloped and the relationship between Miya and Kai progressed too quickly to be believable. I did find the mythical aspect of the plot very intriguing however, and I think I'll eventually pick up the sequel to see what happens next.
adventurous dark mysterious tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: Complicated

4.5⭐️ i honestly don’t know how this duology is not talked about more. it literally has everything one wants in a romantasy: angst, badass main characters, enemies to lovers, WOLF BOY for crying out loud, paranormal activity, and spice (hehe). the wolf girl in me from middle school is SCREAMING and absolutely feral. although, i’d say this is more of a paranormal fantasy than a romantasy.

aj vrana’s prose is next level. absolutely stunning. it has a cinematic quality to it & i felt like i was viewing the story through a movie screen. i literally feel likes this is stranger things in a book, but personally i think it’s better (for above stated reasons). like i said, i have no idea how this duology has not invaded booktok or instagram, but by god, i will do whatever it takes to get the word out there. i’m literally going to jump into book two, so pls pls pls read this book!

I was really hoping to like this. I saw it being compared to The Raven Cycle, and while I can say it has its similarities, there’s just something missing.

The story is so confusing. I didn’t really care about the characters and the dialogue between them was a bit cringe. Insta-love between Kai and Miya was also a huge turn off.

I was looking forward to this, but unfortunately it wasn’t for me.

The 'Hollow Gods' is A.J. Vrana's debut novel and boy she came with a bang. Filled with folklore and amazing characters, this story takes you on a amazing dark and demonic journey. This amazing and creepy story is about a town that's harboring a secret. We meet Miya, whose struggling hard as a university student. She fearful and feels like she's in trouble.

We also meet Kai, whose inspired the infamous line everyone has been reciting in there reviews. He's an absolute handful. We meet him when Miya comes across him and he ends up waking up next to a dead woman. After all, this town is known for women disappearing and then ending up dead. Kai is just one of those that keeps it real and gets to the point. Both he and I would be friends just on the fact that we throw f-bombs out there like compliments.

Then there's Mason, an Oconlogist dealing with personal issues as well. But somehow all three characters merge together to go on a adventure to get to the bottom of the dreamwalker legend. I have to hand it to Vrana for creating such an amazing story, and characters. There's a lot to keep up with with, but everything flows perfectly. Huge thanks to parliament press for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Why is it always the books I just keep putting off that are so freaking good!!

I do not know what I was expecting.....but it wasn't this, but I am not mad. This book kept me so interested from the very beginning.

Giving us three POV's

Mason- a doctor who is running away from choices that led to the death of one of his patients. That brings him to the town of Black Hollow where he stumbles into the towns superstition and after a man is hit by a bus starts to think that maybe the superstitions have some truth to them.

Miya- A college girl in Black Hollow who's slipping into depression because after wanting to be a journalist finds out that the path isn't what she was hoping and loses all will to even try in school, but one day a wolf on the verge of death comes into her life and with one piece of jerky at a time she gains his trust

Kai- (my faves

The Hollow Gods is a dark tale that blurs the line between reality and myth, making the reader question everything. The story lures you in and you are immediately hooked, always wondering what's going to happen.
The book focuses on 3 characters and each chapter is from one of their POV.
Miya is a young woman who struggles with anxiety, depression and insomnia, she never believed in the old folklore that runs through the town but when she starts to have weird dreams she begins to think she is going crazy and that the Dream Walker is coming for her next.
Kai is a young man who has secrets of his own, never letting anyone get too close to him until he meets Miya one night and everything changes for him.
Mason is an oncologist at the hospital in the city but ends up running from his own problems to Black Hollow thinking that this quiet town is the perfect place to grieve and take a break but little does he know that his adventure is only just getting started.
Each character has a distinctive voice so you always know exactly who is at the forefront, and eventually these 3 people cross paths in search for the truth and they come together to help one another try to figure out the curse of the myth that has been plaguing the town's residents for years.
The ending was built up throughout the book and has a nice little twist to it that you may or may not see coming and it is left open to make the reader wonder what is next for these people.
If you are a fan of dark tales with deeper meanings, with aspects of magical realism and fantasy, then this book is the perfect read for you!

It was interesting . Like the idea of it! Could do with less analogies or maybe if they were placed better.
It was a bit confusing at first
