Cycle of the Werewolf

Stephen King

3.54 AVERAGE

adventurous dark mysterious tense fast-paced

A fun little “creature feature” with twelve monthly chapters about a little town suffering under the threat of a werewolf once a month. It’s a very short quick read but I enjoyed it.

This would have been more fun as a full fledged novel.

6 severed pig’s heads out of 10

An incredibly short, but entertaining read.

Characterisation is minimal - this is pure plot and forward momentum! However, the descriptive language King uses here is some of the most beautiful of his I've ever read. Really simple but poetic.

Short. Sweet. To the point.

I liked this one more than the average King fan. He was exploring something here that has come to be the graphic novel of today.

This story is way too short, so there’s no character building at all. Moreover, the plot is only so-so as it is a typical werewolf story.

The only good things about this book are the illustrations and the way the story was told.

Illustrations are damn cool. I wish more SK books have the illustrations. They are quite raw and feels real. The terror ooze through the pictures.

The way that the story is told was amazing as well. I love that it was told chronologically from Jan to Dec. amazing.

This was very nostalgic for me - being the source material for the 80's Corey Haim movie 'Silver Bullet' the first werewolf movie I ever saw - and it scared the bejeezuz out of me.

This short story packs a punch - delves straight into the action. While managing to get me to cringe, I didn't get the build of suspense and tension. Partly because I already knew the ending (thanks to the movie) and partly because it's so short leaving out all that building ambiance King is famous for.

I liked that the protagonist is wheelchair bound, brave and intelligent. Way to go for representation of diversity and an unlikely hero with depth.

The werewolf also find justification in its actions... however misguided. Plus it harkens back to the days of truly terrifying monsters - animal/human hybrids... not some hot stud with abs who magically transforms into an oversized dog. I like my monsters to defy nature - something about breaking all the rules flips a switch in my brain and adds to the fear.

Great ending.

That was extremely enjoyable. I can’t find anything to fault. The format works really well, the illustrations are excellent.

Good characters, gruesome kills, and a satisfying ending. I get why people say it’s too short and they are right but I don’t mind because all of what’s in the novela is great.

It’s difficult to know where to place this in the ranking  as it’s so different to his usual format. I guess it comes down to how much I enjoyed it and I enjoyed this one a lot.

I’ve finished two King books today and I’m happy with both of them. Might as well keep the King marathon going and start another known as...Christine.

I’m sorry but this felt really stupid. It’s probably just not my genre and I’ve never read anything by Stephen King before this. I should probably try one of his major books instead.

Not a book really... Read the whole thing in one lunch break in the library.
