I am shocked that I liked this book as much as I did. While the romance felt forced and quick, I enjoyed everything else. This was a book that kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happens next. The magic system was unique and unusual. While the story certainly had its slow points, and could have potentially been 50 pages shorter, I loved the majority of the story. I can’t wait for the second book to come out.

Enchanting story that I kept thinking about after I put it down. The writing was so atmospheric that I could almost feel the environment of the story as I was reading it. Even though the characters were flawed, it was easy to become invested in their story. I can’t wait for the sequel because the story ends with no real conclusion. Loved it!

i really enjoyed this book! i love ailesse and sabine’s friendship. i also love that it takes place in a french sort-of setting! if you’re looking for a slow-burn enemies to lovers, than you probably won’t enjoy it that much, but if you don’t mind a more quick paced enemies to lovers, then i definitely recommend it!

Different, interesting story. It's had a unique twist on magic and I like the the simplicity of it.  The multiple pov gives it a unique story telling when there is so much going on you get to see a little bit of everything. Twist and turns and it is a true to the term enemies to lovers story. Great story on friendship, found family, and romance.

Because I write this as much to remember it as to share my thoughts, here’s how I’d tag this book if it was on AO3:

enemies to lovers,
seriously from knife meet throat to spit swapping,
don’t you just love when ✨women✨,
doing the gods work by stealing from the French,
thieves with cloaks,
psychopomps,
safe for work,
kidnapping,
if I wasn’t afraid of the dark before…,
bones,
death witches,
folklore,
Sabine deserves the world,
almost too hetero,
mommy issues,
ritual sacrifice

Highly recommend

This book wasn't quite what I expected, but that just made it all the better. I love that the Bone Criers use the "grace" of animals as opposed to having traditional magic. Its such an interesting twist on a classic fantasy. I love Sabine and Ailesse as examples for strong femal characters, but I also love the turn of character that Bastian experiences. They grow together through the story, and I cant wait to read the sequel and hopefully get more of Sabine's story.

Ha! Once more luck was on my side! Fairyloot included another book that was already on my wishlist in one of their boxes. I had contemplated taking this book with me to my parents, but eventually decided not to. But, since I'm back home now there was no reason not to delve into this story. So, this morning I picked up the book and started reading.

And from the very first page I was sucked in and the story actually never let me go again. That's mostly because there's never really a dull moment in the book, even though it's quite a big book. Yes, there are moments of characters talking and doing normal things, but there is a lot of action and tension too. There's most of all a lot of danger and because of the multiple point of views we always know a little more than the characters, which only makes it more exciting and thrilling.

The true star of the book is the world and the mythology. I was incredibly fascinated by the Bone Crier's, their faith and most of all their rituals. And due to the very vivid writing style I could almost feel the awe and wonder myself whenever something mythologic and breathtaking was described. And I have the feeling that this book doesn't even scratch the tip of the iceberg yet. I'm pretty sure there's much more mythology and background to be discovered and revealed in the upcoming sequel.

On top of that I also liked the characters and most of all their complexity when it comes to their morality. Every character in this book, both the "good" guys and the "bad" guys, has redeeming qualities or flaws. Every character is motivated by very strong things and life events and has a very good reason to act the way they act and do what they do. Therefore it's easy to root for them, but at times also hard to decide who or what to root for.

And like I already said, it feels that in a way this story is only the beginning. I will certainly pre-order the second book, because I'm curious where this will eventually go.
