As a big fan of the TV show I was quite disappointed in the book. These first two books portray a much different Elena than we see in the show.
In The Awakening and The Struggle, Elena is self absorbed and vain. I don't do well with books in which I do not like the main character. Bonnie and Damon were very close to how they are represented in the show. Stefan is super annoying and his life only matters because Elena exists. I couldn't get into that.
I know this book is much older than Twilight and Vampire Academy and other young adult vampire books but the insta-love, love triangle thing is so played out.
My review of The Awakening:
Second read: November 17, 2016: The insta-love in this story is ridiculous. Elena falls instantly in love with Stefan who falls instantly in love with her. But Stefan has a history of insta-love as he immediately fell in love with Katherine as did Damon.
I still enjoy reading The Awakening because I can imagine the actors in the show as the characters. There are lots of plot points in the tv show that make the story better. Like in the show Stefan and Damon are originally from Mystic Falls, where this story takes place. In the book the brothers are originally from Italy.
I also really love Caroline in the tv show who barely makes an appearance in the story. And in the show Elena has a cute younger brother Jeremy who gets into all sorts of trouble. In the book she has a much younger sibling Meredith who doesn't add anything to the plot.
If I were to recommend to non Vampire Diary fans I would suggest that watch the tv show airing on the CW. If I had not first watched the show I don't think I would like the book at all.
When I first read The Awakening in 2011 I rated the book 4/5 stars. On re-reading I rate it 3/5 stars. I do plan on continuing the series though I'm even more excited to continue watching the show on Netflix!
First read: January 18, 2011: I love the show more than the book but still a great read. 4/5 stars

I guess I enjoyed reading this, but not because it was so good; I had watched the series and I guilty-pleasure-kind-of-liked it, so I was naturally comparing the book(s) to the series all the time because oh boy are they different. Kudos to the writers of the series, who made this into something so much better in terms of plot(s), characters etc. This is hard to say but the Twilight books are much much better lol.
For now, I will say that I still love the TV show more than the series, but...it's a really good show! L.J. Smith has a lovely way with words, more so than She Who Must Not Be Named. They are easy to read, and once Damon came into play, it got much more interesting.
Ugh! I am so glad this is over!! I finished the book because it was a bookclub choice, otherwise I would have set it aside. I can't criticize the writers work like others have. I just couldn't relate to the characters at all. And the end got my blood boiling. In Austen terms, "inconstancy" is a huge aggravation for me in literature.
I orginially picked up this book it was because of the tv show, I was looking for answers. I came to find that the book and the show are nothing alike but I enjoy them both. While I felt that the first book moved too quickly to be believable but the second made much more sense.Smith does a wonderful job of setting a very dark stage for the upcoming sequels. Of course they've left me hanging so I have to go out and purchase the third and fourth ones.
Disappointed that this wasn’t good at all. The TV show took significant liberties with characters and storyline, and is still way better.
Loved it! I can't wait to read the next two! Stefan and Damon are great characters and I can't wait to see what Elena does in the following books!
Elena is the queen at Fell's Church high but the arrival of a new student, Stefan Salvatore, is about to change everything. First, they are these agressions taking place and then, the murder of a teacher on Halloween! Everything points to Stefan but Elena is sure he's innocent. She's going to confront Stefan who'll tell her about his very long life, starting in Rennaissance Florence. He became a vampire for the love of a girl to whom Elena bears a striking ressemblance.
This is quite a classic vampire novel. Every ingredient is in it : the reluctant vampire, his sworn ennemy who embraces vampirism, a past love who still has an influence on the present, the final battla between both vampires for the love of a girl.
Still, the author sucks you (no pun intended) into her story quite easily by putting her vampires amidst teenage drama. All in all, a good read!

Wow! I absolutely adore these books/this series, so excited to read the next two! After falling in love with the TV series, a work friend told me that the books held so much more magic and were worth the read, and I completely agree. The books are so similar yet so different to the show, with the same familiarity and magic, but a whole new stories. Definitely an easy book to read, and I'd say a classic in young adult fiction, I wish it was more praised in todays age as it's so underrated.
