I think this story would have been way better if Elena wasn't such a flat character. I really didn't like the way she and Stefan became a couple... she was selfish and treated Matt like crap, and she knew absolutely nothing about Stefan, only that she wanted him. I don't buy the beginning of their love story. Dumb. The second book was better after they were a little more established. I still think there's not a lot of substance to their relationship, though.

I was actually a bit of a fan of the T.V. show the first couple of seasons, but I couldn't get through just one of the books. Badly written, poor character development, and I was confused most of the time. A lot of the story relied on useless plot twist for dramatic effect, but lacked any real plot.

i can see why this was so popular. didn’t really intrigue me though.
I might be a little old to read a high school love story but I really did like this book. Stefan is sweet and Damon just flat out pisses me off. If I were Elena I would have hauled off and slapped him by now!
I took a month long break in between the two volumes contained in this book, because, if I'm being completely honest with you, I got bored. The love between Elena and Stefan is too fluffy for me, too perfect, too unrealistic. I'm getting too old for puppy romance.
The passages with Damon, on the other hand, really tickle my fancy. I love the combination of dread, anger and attraction Elena feels towards him. Damon has... layers. My favourite scene was the one on the rooftop, in the second book. Nothing really happens, they just talk; but it's a really nice scene that showcases the complicated relationship these two characters have.
My biggest gripe is that the books don't have their own, self-contained plots within the overarching narrative, or at least that's what it felt like. Certain important plot elements are brought up, then forgotten until the next volume - and not very subtly. The first book ends and flows seamlessly into the next one. The second book ends on a cliffhanger as well, which is resolved in the next chapter (which I think should have been the last chapter of the second book, but what do I know). Yes, sure, in a way book one is about Stefan and book two is about Damon; but the narrative is just a beginning followed by a whole lot of middle, if that makes sense, without an end.
