Characters are so deeply flawed, but yet so real.
I wish I enjoyed this book more than I did. It had all the things I love dark academia, horror, and vampires.
I struggled with this one and it felt like forever to finish.
It just couldn’t grab me and the characters just didn’t stick. I’m disappointed because I was so excited for this read!

Finished chapter 8
I didn’t know until 10% mark that this was YA Romantasy, which explains why it’s not as engaging as I hoped.
The concept is interesting, and I might come back and finish it later. I would have definitely enjoyed this as a teenager but I think I’m no longer the target audience.

this reads like a wattpad fanfiction, not even AO3 worthy… i’d give it a 1 just for the trees that died for this
The overall writing and concept of this book were unique and I loved that, unfortunately the main female character was insufferable. Kidane feels very one dimensional, if you take away her need to find her sister and the things she does in the name of that then she's a little unhinged. Susenyos and the side characters are what kept me reading this book because I wanted to learn more about them. I probably won't pick up the next book because the plot twist upset me more than anything and made the first 70% seem almost pointless .
3.5. Wish I enjoyed this more but just there was just sooo much going on I got confused quite a bit

This book drew me in very quickly. I love books about vampires but have always been more of a fan of the adaptations where vampires are conflicted dark creatures, like Anne Rice’s depictions. Rather than the more modern vampires which seem to be more like ordinary people who just happen to drink blood and live forever. Immortal Dark has the more dark take on vampires but adds interesting and complex political dynamics between the different vampire families and a dark academia element. I also enjoyed the East African influence in the book, because it provided a take on vampires I had not seen before and gave me an opportunity to learn a bit more about the culture of that region of Africa.
This book, while marked as YA, is actually quite dark. I’m surprised it hasn’t been moved into adult as the only YA part of the book is the age of the main character, Kidan. There is a lot of murder, death and torture in the book and while they serve to move the plot in a way I really enjoyed, I don’t think I’d recommend it to the younger range of YA. My guess is that people might label this as “New Adult” but you will still find it in the YA section of the bookstores.
I love dark books with complex characters, dark academia and vampires so this was definitely my cup of tea. A character’s motivations have always been interesting to me in a novel so spending most of this book trying to figure out what Susenyos was up to was pretty fun. And the strange tension and dynamics between Susenyos and Kidan also added amusement. There is an underlying sexuality that comes with writing about vampires and the author does a great job of building tension between the characters while also pushing the growing hatred they have for each other. Each character in the book has its own unique motivations and this creates a complicated dynamic in the school that keeps you guessing. The ending was really satisfying on this one and sets up the second book in an intriguing way. I will definitely pick up the next book in this trilogy.

I love the concept, and the plot line, but MC was very frustrating at times to force through. The B cast were very interesting and I hope we see more of them in the future books, and I think MC will hopefully have grown in her inner monologue for book two. DEFINITELY not a YA book in how that term is applied today, solidly in "new adult" section, its quite dark in places. I would suggest 15+ ages
