The Last Goodbye

Anna lost the love of her life, Spencer, 3 years ago to a tragic accident. On NYE she calls his old number to discover that it’s been reassigned to someone else. When Brody, who is grappling with his own unspoken tragedy, answers a unique bond is formed between them.

This story is about a lot of love, aching heartbreak, learning to forgive yourself again, and finding love once more. This book was really well written! The audiobook was really engaging and brought the characters to life. There were moments that the story dragged a little bit, but overall the character development was wonderful. There were deep and meaningful moments mixed in with lighthearted scenes. This is a non-traditional romance that will leave your heart satisfied with the ending and wanting more!

this book was OK. i hated how slow it was and how the main characters just cried the whole time and felt sorry for themselves. it was cute tho.

What a hopeful book this is.

This is a story about love, about grief and all the emotions in-between.

When Anna tragically loses her husband she struggles. Every day blending into the next, she never quite comes back to life again .

Until one night when yet again she finds herself dialling Spencer's number yet again (just to hear his voice) only this time someone answers.

That someone is Brody. He too is in the midst of grief, a man filled with sadness and guilt.

Fate or just pure luck?

Either way this seems to be the start of both of them finally moving forward, all it took was for someone to listen, to truly hear what they had to say rather than friends and family who think they know how they should be feeling and acting.

This story was both heartwarming and heartbreaking all at the same time.

Tragically beautiful.

Slow moving, each chapter producing just a little bit more emotion.

Refreshing to read as it didn't rely on drama to make me turn the pages, simply raw, human emotion.

I felt connected and invested in Anna and Brody, both as separate people and as a blossoming couple.

The Last Goodbye is a tale that tugs at the heart strings, quietly compassionate.

Offering so much more than a story of new beginnings, instead looking at how each moment in our lives can change us and shape our lives, and yes that doesn't always mean hearts and flowers, negativity is allowed to. It's how we grow from those sorts of events that really matter.

The Last Goodbye is not at all what I expected it to be. Something about the description and the cover made me think it would be a lighter look at a widow finding love again but it's an emotional exploration of grief and mourning. The overwhelming sense of loss Anna feels makes the book heavy at times (I had to push through the first third) but once it gets in its groove, it also inspires hope. I loved Brody as a character and the revelation of his background caught me completely off guard. Lucas does a marvelous job of making the characters feel like friends and I wanted both Anna and Brody to find not only happiness but also peace.

If you're looking for a book that's both heartbreaking and heartwarming, give this one a try.

4.5 rounded up!!

This was such a heart warming story of grief, growth, love and friendship! It gave me some Sleepless in Seattle and PS I Love You vibes as well. Such a wonderful read that reminded me that romance will always be a wonderful genre to read!

“Anna's world was shattered three years ago when her husband Spencer was killed in a tragic accident. On New Year's Eve, Anna calls Spencer's old phone just to hear his voicemail greeting. But to her surprise someone picks up.”

This is a really interesting concept for a romance book so I was intrigued by it. (I also follow the author on tiktok and she’s lovely) And I’m happy to say I wasn’t disappointed.

I really enjoyed this book. I dealt with some hard hitting subjects like grief and mental health and I think Fiona Lucas had done w great job at representing those things.

There’s also a sense of mystery in this book as you don’t know much about the character Brody to start with. I found myself wanting to keep going to find out more.

Antonia Beamish does a good job is the narrator but she was definitely a narrator that I had to warm into. But that is a personal preference thing. But didn’t do anything to lessen my enjoyment of the book

“Life isn’t always easy… Things happen… Things you couldn’t have predicted. And when they do, it can throw you, turn you upside down and your life takes a very different path.”

Anna knows very well that life isn’t easy. In fact, three years ago she found that out the hard way when she lost her husband in a tragic accident. For three years, Anna has just been surviving, managing to get from one day to the next without actually living. Then, New Years Eve comes and everything changes… she calls her husbands number and someone answers the phone… Anna soon discovers that the stranger on the phone has his own secrets and demons to deal with…

The Last Goodbye is a beautifully written novel by Fiona Lucas, that centres around a two different journeys of self-discovery, whilst dealing with crippling grief, guilt and regret.

Fiona Lucas has managed to make you feel like you are on the journey with the two main characters, living their lives with them. You feel everything that they feel - the happiness, the sadness, the panic attacks, the overwhelming sense of guilt… This book is an emotional rollercoaster, but one I can guarantee you will enjoy.

If you want an emotional, heart-breaking yet also heart-warming read, with an underlying message of ‘forgiving yourself is key to being able to move forward’ then this is your next book!
