In the seventeenth century, a Macnachtan witch cursed the Chattan family. When a Chattan male falls in love, he dies. Now all that’s left of the Chattan line are siblings Neal, Harry, and Margaret. Unlike her brothers, Margaret is determined not to fall in love. But fate has other plans for Margaret and in the midst of her quest to break the curse and save her brothers’ lives, Margaret is thrown into the path of Heath Macnachtan.

Heath doesn’t believe in Margaret’s talk of curses, but with not only his livelihood but those of his clansmen at risk, he agrees to help Margaret on her quest. The longer he and Margaret are together, the closer they become. And there’s something supernatural out there that doesn’t like it. It’s not long before Heath becomes a believer. The question is, can he and Margaret break the curse, or will their love cause the curse to end both their lines?

Cathy Maxwell brings her Chattan Curse series to a satisfying conclusion in The Devil’s Heart. Heath and Margaret’s book is my favorite of the trilogy. The Devil’s Heart has curses, betrayal, excitement, and romance in abundance. I adored Margaret and Heath together and was rooting for them to break the curse so that not only they, but Neal, Thea, Harry, and Portia could find happiness.

I recommend reading the first two Chattan Curse books, Lyon’s Bride and The Scottish Witch, before starting The Devil’s Heart. The curse is inextricably tied to the romances and the clues from one book lead to the next, so the series is much more enjoyable when read in order. There’s so much buildup to the resolution of the curse that I was concerned that the climax of that plotline wouldn’t be as exciting as I’d hoped. I needn’t have worried; Ms. Maxwell makes the payoff worth it. I was left with a few questions about what happened to the spirits at work in The Devil’s Heart, but overall I finished the book a well-satisfied reader. Now that I have all three books, I’m looking forward to revisiting the trilogy as a whole.

I am happy that we finally got a conclusion to this series. The previous books ended without the couples getting their "happily ever after"

This last book starts out with Margaret Chattan, the first female born in her line since Fenella Macnachtan cursed the Chattans. The curse states that when a male Chattan falls in love, he will die. Every member of the Chattan line has succumbed to love and died from it, but not before he get's his lady pregnant, thus ensuring that the curse continues.

Margaret is traveling to the home of the Macnachtan's in hopes of saving her two older brothers, Neal and Harry (their stories are told in Lyon's Bride and The Scottish Witch) who have fallen in love, and thus have fallen deathly ill.

She encounters the force of Fenella and is "rescued" by Heath Macnachtan, who happens to be the last in the line of Macnachtans and is the Laird of his clan after his older brother, Brodie, is brutally murdered.

I really liked the storyline. It kept me in suspense and there is a little bit of mystery thrown in (who killed Brodie? which, by the way I totally guessed from the beginning who it was
Spoilerthat evil Dara!
)

And i got my happy ending :)

Margaret is on a most important mission...one that could mean life or death for both of her brothers. The Chattan Curse has been in their family for generations...whenever a male falls in love, he will die soon thereafter. With both of her brothers almost paralized, and close to death, she knows she must succeed on her mission, because they have never been so close to breaking it. With 'Fenella's ' book in her possession, she knows she has a real chance. Then her carriage crashes from a powerful wind, and she is rescued by Heath Macnachtan, who is a descendent of the one witch who cursed her family all those years ago. Heath doesn't believe in any curse, or witches, and cats that just appear out of no where. When he rescues Margaret, he senses something odd about her. Heath has many debts, and is barely staying afloat as it is. With the recent death of his brother, he is now Laird, and must take responsibility for his sisters and all those that are under his care. Even though his sisters are trying to push him into marrying Margaret, he knows the last thing he needs is marrying someone who is only here to break some curse he doesn't even believe in. However when he starts to lose his heart to her, he starts to realize that there are some things that are very real, and it will take a huge leap of faith to save the only woman that he loves more than the air he breathes...I was given the opportunity by Edelweiss, Avon, and Harpercollins to read this ARC. I have just adored this series so far. Cathy Maxwell never disappoints...that is all that I have to say. Every time I read her, I just think to myself...she is one of the main reasons I love Historical Romance so much. She makes history come alive, along with the characters she portrays in her stories. Her writing is so addicting, that you can't help but feel yourself becoming enthralled in the story...so much so you can't put it down for one minute. For those of you, who have never read from this author or this series...you are missing out on a thrilling ride that will take you back through time, where magic is real, and love surpasses time and space. We start in the story with Margaret and Heath meeting, where he rescues her from a carriage accident on her way up to see Heath. Little does he know, that she would change his life forever. At the beginning, there is sparks flying here, there and everywhere....I felt like I was watching fireworks. They could be explosive together. But as we progress in the story futher, we see a gentle love start to build between them. Heath doesn't believe in any curse or witches or spells, but he softens toward Margaret...so much so that you just melt when seeing them together. The bed scenes were so "Sigh" lovely, and passionate, yet gentle in its simplicity. It made me want to trade places at times. I loved the paranormal theme we have going...its not a huge aspect, we see much more focus on the love story than anything else (which is always a plus in my book) however I did like seeing the focus on the curse. As it got closer to the end, I was hoping it wouldn't be a cliff hanger or anything. Was I disappointed, shocked, or displeased in any way? NEVER!!! I was so happy I got a tear in my eye..I almost couldn't read for a minute. I loved the power of the love story that just climaxes in such a perfect way....that it leaves one grinning like a fool at the end. It did have some unexpected twists and turns that I never saw coming....and I was delighted to see how it turned out. It was the perfect end to a exciting trilogy that has kept me on the edge of my seat so far. If you are looking for a astounding romance that will delight you and make you believe that LOVE does conquer all....this is a MUST READ!!! A Classic tale of love, magic, danger, and passion that will curl your toes!!

Some of the magic elements were cool. The relationship between the main characters felt a little like insta-love and could have used a bit more development to me.

This wasn’t my favourite Cathy Maxwell book; I think the curse aspect went a little too far into the fantastic for my taste. I don’t think I would have been as thrown for the loop had I read the previous books in the Chattan Curse trilogy. The curse, presumably, had been explained in the previous two books, so getting to this one, I felt that I really missed out on what had been going on to this point.

I also wasn’t crazy about the characters in this one. Margaret and Heath both seemed to fall a little flat and seemed more like stereotypes than characters. I didn’t really feel like either character connected to one another; therefore, I questioned the depth of their feelings for one another. I don’t think you should be questioning the hero and heroines emotions – this is romance after all, they HAVE to be in love by the end and the reader has to believe it (at least, in my opinion).

Overall, I wasn’t stunned by this one, but it’s one that you have to read if you want to know how the Chattan Curse is resolved.
