I was sucked into this dispute torn land and fell in love with all the characters. The love blossoming between Jack and Adaira was a sweet and slow burn rivals to lovers. The mystery, the clash between clans, the magic, I loved it all.

This felt quick for such a thick book. The characters were well drawn, the setting was fascinating. It's an interesting magic system and a central mystery that draws you in.
I can't say that the romance was a very strong component. It was there, but I didn't care about it much. You know who is going to end up with whom from the beginning, it feels inevitable. Toward the middle, it felt like the author was inventing reasons to keep characters apart, and it felt clunky. The secondary romance was more interesting, or at least I was more emotionally invested in it.
It's split-perspective was so well done it was almost unnoticeable at times. The point of view flows seamlessly between several characters, never jumping away from the action mid-scene or jarring you out of one storyline and into another. It was almost as though the characters handed off perspective to each other. And since all plots are closely aligned, it was never confusing.
I'm intrigued by the mystery of the island, and can't wait to read the sequel.

Very middle of the road. This was the first book I got with BOTM when it was first released, and its sat on my TBR for so long purely because she’s thick and intimidating! Definitely could have been 120 pages shorter. I just couldn’t develop an emotional attachment to any of the characters. If this hadn’t been for a bookclub I probably would have DNFd, but did enjoy it much more the last 3rd of the book. Probably won’t finish the duology.
Graphic: Kidnapping
Moderate: Violence, Blood
Minor: Sexual content, Death of parent

At this point, Rebecca Ross has me in a chokehold! I absolutely enjoyed every minute of this book!! The magic system, the lore, the characters, the mystery, and the relationships. This is a fantasy you can really sink your teeth into.
