Spoiler
the trial aspect of things idk if that's a spoiler i read this a long time ago
I wonder how accurate this is to actual Amish people in court. I understand that religion is important to Katie, but if your leaders are telling you to listen to your lawyer to avoid jail, it’s ok if you bend the truth a bit. Katie was very unlikeable with how she never gave a straight forward answer, and it was incredibly unbelievable that a lawyer would stay on an Amish farm. Also, the 10 year age gap between Adam and Katie, PLUS the fact that he would have had so much more power in the dynamic due to him being English, is very gross. I wish Katie would have gone to jail, if that meant the book was half as long.
Meh. I kept reading because I wanted to know what happened but, meh.
I first tried to read this book about 10 years ago and I just couldn't get through it. In fact, I stopped reading altogether because I wouldn't let myself start anything new until I finished this.
It's haunted me since then, so I revisited. I wouldn't say I'm glad I went back, but I do feel a sense of relief. It's over.
Anyway, an actual review:
Ellie is not likeable. One good deed doesn't make up for a life of intentionally defending terrible people. Getting back together with your college boyfriend doesn't make up for breaking his heart in the first place.
I guess a main character doesn't have to be likeable to enjoy a book, but everything about Ellie just pissed me off.

An excellent mystery...I still find myself musing about it several months after finishing the book. It seems to me that the author had a good grasp of the Amish community, though, not being Amish myself, I can't know for sure. I just heard a speech by someone who does therapy with Amish youth, though, and his assessment was consistent with Picoult's perspective on the Amish.
Spoilers ahead...
I was frustrated by the mother's apparent willingness to let her daughter go to jail for a crime that she herself committed. And I, too, wondered why she would have killed the baby in the first place, since having a baby does not necessarily mean her daughter would be excommunicated. As a mother myself, it's pretty hard to imagine any compassionate and sane person killing their own grandchild.
Still, the book was a page-turner, and I was fascinated the whole way through.

I listened to the audio book; the narration, provided by multiple readers, was so difficult to listen to. Often one of the characters in a dialog whispers so softly the volume must be turned up and then the other character, speaking at a normal tone, blasts you out. No likable characters. The ending was just awful.
