This book was so disappointing I didn’t know what I was actually expecting but nothing came from read it. I just wanted to end to stop the boredom. Predictable, no memorable characters, I don’t know just didn’t moved me…
This has been sitting on my shelf for roughly 11 years and I'm glad I finally got a chance to read it (yay for Jolabokaflod).
This is an excellent story from the perspective of a changeling in a small town. The world, its magic, and its history are fantastically constructed. The relationships are amazing, especially the friendships. It's so nice to have a "not quite normal" character who isn't a loner or complete outsider. He has friends, and his best friend is really well written (he's a ride-or-die kind of best friend).
It's engaging from the get-go and the final wrap up is very satisfying.

Read this book for the Bank Street Book Fest. I'm going to a discussion group called "YA Horror Without the Bloodsuckers." In terms of literary merit, it probably deserves 4 stars. And I liked both the changeling and the kickass chick he falls for. But a) the book was just a little TOO creepy for me to truly love and b) I don't really go for the whole "supernatural things are defined by human beings so when we change our beliefs, they change too" plot device. It's too much like the old "and then I woke up and it was all just a dream" plot device.
Pleasantly surprised by this book. It wasn't the storyline I was expecting but the pacing of the plot really worked well for this stand alone novel. I enjoyed it, and I really liked the majority of the characters in the book. One of my favourite things about this book is how creepy it can be and at times quite deep and disturbing but not so much that it made it hard to read in any way. Glad I finally got round to reading it.
Mackie does everything he can to blur into the background and not stand out, but sometimes it’s just not enough and he badly wants to be normal. But normal in the town of Gentry is to pretend that babies aren’t really swapped for changelings, sacrificed to appease the Lady, and Mackie finds himself fighting for a new day when it doesn’t rain.
I badly wanted to adore this book, but didn’t. Ot had enough to capture my interest and it was a fair read. I’d like a more adult version perhaps, one that really squeezes the black of your heart and doesn’t want to let go.

Tithe for dudes. The pacing was off; just as I was settling into it being a slower, Mackie-finds-himself type book, it became HOLY SHIT YOU GUYS WE HAVE TO SAVE THIS THING, and although I didn't see Mackie's solution coming -- and props for that -- I didn't really get *why* it worked. More like 3.5 stars. Fun, quick read, good world, likable characters, and I'm always sucker for a sibling bond, but it didn't quite come together.
Interesting, Tim Burton like story. There were a lot of flaws, but it was still an enjoyable read.
i dug this book, it was sort of dark and i enjoyed the writing. i'd read her again!
There were things to like about this book, and even more potential, but ultimately I think the world was too underdeveloped to be successful. I appreciate that the otherworldly aspect was something new--not vampires and werewolves. But because it is a less familiar realm, it needed to be brought to life more. What is the history of these "others"? And how exactly do they survive? The first is hinted at, and the second is confusingly--not satisfactorily-- explained, but so much more was needed. And, as is often the case with YA stories, there's the issue of how a teenager with no skills to speak of managed to save the day in a letdown of a showdown between the kids and the bad guys.
In summary, not a waste of time, but not something I'd recommend.
