I’ll never not read an Emily Giffin book. Truthfully, I’d give it two stars if it hadn’t kept me turning the pages. I’ve been reading EG’s books for 15 years, & this one fell really flat. The way it starts is so abrupt, I almost put the book down. But I powered through & ultimately enjoyed the eventual Italy setting (though it feels like she just watched White Lotus season 2 for inspo).
In creative writing class, they teach you “show, don’t tell.” This book ignored that advice. The plot & the characters were all very surface level. It spent too much time in Atlanta & random side quests & not enough time in college & with the relationships — both platonic & romantic. I devoured EG’s last book in a day, so I hope the next one hits the mark.

I really wanted to like this book. The start was promising, but the plot turned into full chaos in the final chapters. The love interests were unrealistic and forced. The ending was rushed.

I liked the first half of this book but the second our main characters left for their trip, I didn’t like a single direction that the plot took. The characters also seemed like different people but not in a good “developmental” type way. Obviously wasn’t happy with how things ended and we never get an answer to the reason for “The Summer Pact” they make???
Bleh. It was a quick read but I enjoyed the first 40%.
