I've been on a serious nautical kick lately! I was a little disappointed in this book, and perhaps it suffered in comparison with the Bloody Jack series I've been reading at the same time. I'd give it a 3.5 if I could, but my biggest problem was that I felt like the characters and the plot lacked some integrity. The crew takes Charlotte into their midst, but suddenly fails to support her at a crucial moment, and she's left to her own devices? Charlotte also seemed a little unbelievable in some ways--trying to avoid spoilers here, but I'm not sure I can accept that a girl from her social class would adapt that quickly to such a change in status and lifestyle as she experiences, nor make the choice she did at the end of the book. That said, I did actually like the ending, and the story as a whole kept me entertained.
This book is so bad. I don't know where to start. Zacharia the side character that makes everything complicated is a bad character. The main character switches sides so fast it's unbelievable. the plot twist is so bad. it doesn't make since for the time period. And the ending. Oh, man ending. Do yourself a favor and stay as far away from this book as possible. it's so bad that it might be my most hated book of all time.
Incredibly good, action-packed and suspenseful, even as a young adult novel and at my second reading (age 23!). I had my reservations about rereading the book, fearing it wouldn't live up to my fond memories, but it was just as hard to put it down the second time through.
loved avi's city of orphans! hope i'll like this as much :D

My younger self would have eaten this up, but my current self had a hard time suspending disbelief. But it's fabulous storytelling, even if it is pretty unbelievable. It's fun, quick, and exciting, which is exactly what I needed while I'm in the middle of a loooong but excellent book.
I read this book in the 5th grade and I can honestly say it is one of my all time favorite books. While all the other classes were reading the typical books you read in the 5th grade, my teacher insisted we read The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. My teacher would close the book at the end of a chapter and we would beg him to keep reading. I read it again in 6th grade and I insisted my little sister read it, who also loved it. Every 13 year old girl should read it.
