if you are someone who wants to learn more about what has been going on in palestine, why this goes so far beyond october 7th, this is the right book. it's a very lucid, detailed and yet straightforward analysis of the settler colonial project that has been taking place on palestinian land since the british mandate, and how western powers had a crucial hand in perpetuating and financing it. it was difficult to learn how everything we see now has happened many times before - the gaslighting, the media coverage, the manipulating of information, the dehumanisation of palestinians. the author is very good at making the information digestible without dumbing it down, so it's a good entry point even if you're not familiar with the history of the region.

it doesn't feel right to rate a book that chronicles a century of oppression, ethnic cleansing and hatred in as much detail as this book. but despite not rating it i will say that this book is imperative, especially now. it provides extensive evidence across history of the horrific slaughter of palestinians, it provides extremely necessary context for everything israel is currently doing, and it examines in depth all the different roles played by israel, palestine, the US, the UK, jordan, syria, and more. a insightful, personal and extremely intelligent geopolitical examination of how one of the worst settler colonialist projects has been carried out for more than a century

Interesting book but I wasn't really hoping for an entirely historical perspective. If I was I would probably be hoping for a slightly broader view.

This book is very dense and detailed which was a challenge in audio book format. Had to return it to the library and may try again the old fashioned way.

Dense but very worthwhile. While it reminded me just how much I don’t know about the history of not just Palestine but the Middle East more generally, this helped me contextualize the current war with the backdrop of the last 100+ years of conflict between Israel and Palestine. The perspective/bias was clear, but it was well argued and substantiated, and the author’s retelling of his own experiences in the region added a valuable dimension to the book. I’m hoping to read more on the topic to continue filling in the holes in my knowledge.
