I read my first Dexter novel in 2009 while living in London. I was, immediately, completely and utterly disappointed. One of the few times I can say that the television show (even the final couple of seasons, which were terrible) is much, much better than the books. And yet, for some reason, I felt compelled to keep reading the damn things.
Now it's eight years later, and I have finally finished the eight and final book. Like literally every other book in the series, it wasn't great and I'm glad to finally but the series behind me. And yet, I'm also strangely disappointed that it's come to an end. So long Dexter, I'll miss wondering "Huh, I wonder if a new book has come out" every couple of years.

Maybe a 3.5
As I have in all the other books, I love Dexter's narration. It's hilarious. And this book wasn't an exception. I love the humor of this series. Though I will say his thoughts were focused a lot more on doubts in himself we didn't see previously and I could see how readers might not like that. Dexter is losing his touch. It didn't really bother me though. In fact throughout the first two thirds of this book I was loving it and was completely engrossed; I thought for sure I'd be giving it a 5 stars.
But then came on some plots points that I don't think totally made sense. It was pretty clear it was happening to fabricate certain character interactions as opposed to an organically occurring event that would make sense in their predicaments. And in terms of a conclusion to such a long running series I'm not sure that this actually wrapped anything up any better than ending the series at the seventh book exactly as it was. It's more final for sure, but there are still things I want to know. And I really, really wish we had a different ending.
Overall, I've loved this series and I will miss Dexter very much.

Very predictable all the way through. I don't remember the other books being as predictable and I don't remember Dexter being that ridiculously unobservant.

Best book of the series by far. Despite that, I am so glad to finally be done with this series. I found the "end boss" disappointing, though I felt the series more or less ended well. Dexter goes out with a bang, which is a much more satisfying ending than that of the TV series based on this excellent series by Jeff Lindsay. Plenty of darkly hilarious Dexter inner monologues and a fast paced story that keeps you wondering what will happen next. Once again you will not be able to help yourself from cheering for a serial killer. Could have been longer, but hey you can't have everything and spoiler alert - he doesn't end up as a lumberjack!
Favorite Quotes
"Smacking somebody with a boat hook in broad daylight just wasn't the same thing as really taking the time to get to know a person, really expressing myself in a pointed way, getting a New Friend to Open Up and share his feelings -- muffled by a gag, of course. Some of these feelings were quite loud and shrill, and it wouldn't do to bother the neighbors."
"Altogether, it gave me a new appreciation for religion. Although, to be truthful, I had always wondered at the blind and unfailing insistence on combining violent and gooey death with human worship. It almost made me wish I could join a church of some kind. What fun they had, especially with their saint! I would fit right in!"

Último livro, Brian é a melhor parte. Dexter acabou... Finalmente!
Loved it, loved it. The perfect ending to our favorite "good" serial killer.
